I use a gray background with telnet, so it isn't a big distraction. (Mind you, some colors look nasty next to the gray.)

For the most part, builders haven't used the $0 color tag for a long, long time. We had made an effort to not use it (using $0$I instead), but I'm not sure if any really new things have been built with it.

I wouldn't mind it if it disappeared.

Untrue. I've used clients before where that did not work. Now highlighting, copying, then pasting into notepad did. But not highlighting in and of itself.
