Why exactly are paladins and hellions only allowed in certain religions? The different faiths don't seem to give any kind of powers or anything that would need to be balanced. I ask because I have a little hellion but i'm only really interested in mira's religion.

It's because of the values of the religions do not necessarily fit with the code or vows of the class. Paladins are the "ultimate" form of the light, while hellions are the "ultimate" form of darkness. Mira would be thrown out immediately because it's a gray aura religion. The two classes are about faith, opposite ends of the spectrum, etc. It's hard for a hellion to carry out the will of darkness while serving an ambiguous god like achernar, nashira, mira, etc.

Even gods of the same aura don't necessarily fit. For instance, Zavijah is a mostly light aura religion, but it doesn't have the hierarchy, support and strict vows that paladins need to go through. The scale, dulrik, and alshain are all organized, militaristic religions.

You can serve a non hellion/paladin god. You just won't get any spells past novice.

You actually cannot be invested. Dulrik hard-coded this one.

You can put on their symbol and cleave anyone who says otherwise. So I reiterate, you can serve any god you want but you won't get your spells.

Technically it's not hard coded. That would mean in the code it says something like 'if religion == mira: denied!'. In general, hard coding is bad, so I try to avoid it. Instead religions have flags and some are flagged as allowing paladins or hellions. It's modifiable at run-time, I just don't intend to modify it. :P
