I don't know about this one. Maybe they were light when they lived, but if they're in the "undead" category, then there was some catalyst that brought them back to life, and FORCED THEM TO STAY THAT WAY. This indicates a third party that they are subservient to, and most likely an evil one. Therefore they're a minion. And minions are just as evil, if not more so, than their masters.

If they're just a spirit, ie, ghost (like the zhensh spirits), then yes, they can be light aura - since they moan, go away, and don't hurt anyone. But undeath is not a pretty thing. It spreads disease, and causes pain to those who see them and MIGHT pity them for their past life. if they were TRULY light aura, they'd put themselves out of their misery.

Ghosts are not undead.

Wraiths, spectres, mummies, ghouls, zombies, wights, animated abominations... They are undead, living beyond the graces of life, and can interact with the material plane, most created to aid necromancers and controlled for a dark purpose.

Ghosts are just dead, and therefore can be white/grey aura.

As for Varloch. Visit your local library for a copy of "The History of the Necropolis".

That History of the Necropolis book is garbage. You should burn it along with your copies of Fahrenheit 451.

I'm torn on the towering zombie example. It comes to the "what is alignment" question...is it behavior/decisions/intentions, or innate nature?
I had originally intended for these zombies to be mindless constructs only capable of following orders, and as such perhaps free of the baggage of alignment. Otherwise, since they are reanimated corpses, perhaps there is some baggage that goes along with the process that stains these creatures no matter how nice/helpful/friendly they are.

In this case, since they are in the direct employ of necromancers, I'll have them be "of dark aura".

However, there are other cases in other areas where I take the other direction, and have beneficial spirits or ghosts that might not be "of dark aura." There, ghosts and spirits are lumped into the undead category by form, and not creation process via necromancer animation.

Here's a nifty idea, why don't you make all undead grey aura, or at least make it based on the aura of the pc/npc you're animating, that way some undead will be unaffected by holy words. :D
