Heh. I've only found a mentor for most of the languages and writing. Not a single one for skills.

Ironically, most of the people from my starting area ignore me. I got help from someone that was probably the exact opposite alignment of me. Definitely on the exact opposite side of the world.

I have a pretty easy time finding out where to level. I look at someone, and if they look slightly more powerful than me I ask them where they've been. On the downside, policing leveling areas is a pain in the [REDACTED] [REDACTED]. Some GM ganked some random character I made as it slept, which wasn't too cool. I just think the mentor to GM gap needs to be filled more adequately in areas, especially given the new familiarity system.

...or mentor points toward their EOM score. Not a bad idea. Just check to see if the leader of the PC group is a mentor, has been to the area, and if someone in the group is within mentoring range and has not been to the area, give the mentor some mentor points.

Id like to see a extra kind of RP reward added rather than giving XP it gives a reward as if you trained up a newbi a few levels as a mentor. The reward can be giving to those who help mentor people outside the mentor code. Exactly what we are talking about giving hints and tips on how to use skills and level etc.

As for taking people around and such some of us still do it but it does take a lot of time to do it. Limiting other RP.

Pro momo it sounds like you have picked a bad starting kingdom for help Uxmal most likely. If not then one where there just isnt someone around to help. Perhaps try one of the more active kingdoms till you get your feet wet. A light aura char generally helps you learn the ropes more as well. Remember anyone in any inn can mentor you can only call a mentor with mentor command in your home. Doesnt stop you from walking into an Inn and going can anyone help me with ... if your a necromancer might not be a good idea though.

Have you asked blatantly "Where should a journeyman of my trade practice his talents?".

A few times, actually. The answer is usually "I don't know."

I have gotten 2 responses:

1) I don't know.
2) Let me take you to this place that you need to know how to solve some form or another of quest, but no one
a) let's you try and learn the quest
b) shows you where to learn of/start the quest

So the result is, I've been around a few months, approaching GM, and I still don't feel I know much. And I'm of level people ask me where to go, and my answer is outside of the limited areas I know, 'I don't know either.'

This is the biggest thing the mud is missing. Not quests. Not mechanics. Not areas. It is IC information that players can learn the game from, inklings of how to explore areas and the likes. You can call it a building problem, but it is also a systemwide problem from my POV.

Amadeo, you're talking about a quest problem - and most quests AREN'T that involved. The only ones that are, are actually Wert's prizewinners. What's being discussed here is savviness with levelling areas. And yes, I've asked people for ideas on levelling spots, and I have always gotten places I've already used up, or places I KNOW for sure are too high for me. (OOC experience wise) - and that Journeyman/Veteran spot is a real clincher.

I have almost thought the NPCs could handle this task. Like just random npcs in taverns, at fountains, and such that can answer questions and give directions to popular adventuring areas.

The only NPC that I know of in the game that REALLY does this, is Hunter.

Here is my suggestions:

a) Remove familiarity. You will never in a 100 years make people RP more by forcing them into discovering new areas. If people dont travel to see other areas it is mainly because they are not interesting or they are too difficult to get to. RP is being countered by the familiarity because your are forced to go certain places at certain stages of your leveling.

b) Dont remove anymore of the well designed areas such as the Undead Caverns, Avan Keep and so forth.

c) Reinstate the portal stone that leads to the wastelands near Teron.

The mud was almost perfect a year or so ago. In my opinion it is okay to add more interesting areas but dont remove the ones the works fine.
