I do actually agree with what you're saying Likar. Infact when I played my Barb,e verytime I sensed someone approaching I would wake up as I thought CS wouldn't work if you were asleep. I'm a bit torn about it being changed though to be honest as anyone that attacked a sleeping barb could kill em as it'd be just like fighting another warrior. CS, Berserk and Fury and the latter aren't really all that good until you train them.

Fury doesn't always kick in and berserk by itself is only a 8-10% heal, a damage boost is really all you get becaus you don't get a weapon speed bonus with berserk until you get fury.

counterstrike already does have limitations.

I wouldn't suggest a nerf because this skill makes people rethink their strategies or get splattered.

Tie it to alertness. When attacked while asleep, alertness kicks in, and if it passes, you're given a chance to CS.

So if they sneak in and you get no message, you have no change at CS?

That's the point of alertness, you can sense sneaking people...

The only one I can think of is that the barbarian has to be fighting, which does jack [REDACTED] for a rogue.

I liked the suggestions of rolls of counterstrike/alertness/level vs. the rogue's hide/backstab/level because that is not how it is now. Mastered counterstrike = untouchable by rogues.

EDIT: This might be a splendid time to bring up the case of people waking up the instant you try to backstab them, while under the influence of the 'sleep' spell.

Seems to have been an unfortunate side-effect of the latest sleep change, when every spell wakes them up.

The rogues do nifty damage to so many classes, even when their opponents are behind undead, charmies, etc. There should be one class out there who gives them hard time with those backstabs. Also no mortal rogue can be sneakier than a ghost. And barbs can even sense unseen spirits. So pulling a dagger behind the back of a barb is really not a good idea. You screw counterstrike you screw half the class.

Note: Even if the barb's opponent doesn't bypass the counterstrike with a good plan, the counterstrike itself can fail anyway.

Light sleeper. Sword under his pillow. Even his friends might get hurt if they woke him up. CS is cool.

If you insist that it 'makes sense' for a barbarian to be superalert while asleep, then at least bring back the old row limitation, because it certainly makes no sense that counterstrike trancends every protection ordinary positions have to offer.

Like every skill, counterstrike should be balanced between what makes sense and what balances it mechanics-wise.
