I thought you wanted less people trying to get to GM and to start roleplaying at lower levels. Isn't this a bit contradictory to that idea?

I wouldn't say it's contradictory. The SK Bonanza is a special event celebration. Some people are already able to get to GM in a few days of play with or without the bonuses. But for the people that complain that it is far too slow, this should be a nice incentive to try a new character. I doubt that those people will GM over this weekend, but they may end up a couple of status levels higher than they would have otherwise.
And the familiarity grouping bonus should address a lot of the other concerns about levelling in a permanent way. SK is about roleplaying, so we want you to have every incentive to level in a group, if you can find one. If one group member hasn't become familiar with the Blasted Chancel but you've already used it up yourself, you can now go ahead and group with confidence that you aren't wasting your time.
