I thought iron < steel < cold iron < tanso. Is cold iron equal to tanso or slightly worse?

Cold iron is better than steel but not as good as tanso. Your inequality is correct

On topic, I would say those special damage items are uncommon. They aren't rare, but uncommon. This is because a few of them have multiple copies. At any rate, players tend to seek the sub-type over damage type due to the massive differences in accuracy, damage and speed.

Off topic, from my experience, cold-iron's hardiness is the same as tanso-steel's. It is between steel and mithril.

It's not the same. Wear a suit of cold iron sometime, then wear a suit of tanso steel. You'll very quickly see the difference.

GL are you referring to the defense stat of it, or the like durability of the eq? I was under the impression that cold iron and tanso were equal in durability.(Meaning like the breaking stat or whatever)

One of the things that I did during the holiday break was to write a new tool to let the staff determine how common certain types of weapons were in the game. I expect that some overused weapon types will change into things that are less used over the next few months.

I'm talking about durability of the material, as has been pointed out by others.
