That's such bullyang. The combat changes came in when I was about mentor, maybe expert, with Alphrenor (I remember the timing because I cunningly suicided in Teron a few seconds before the changeover in what was possibly my worst ever PK attempt [I was rushed]), and he was definitely a defensive dex merc. Admittedly it took some time while I experimented with subtypes to find a suitable one, but high-dex mercs beat the pants off any single other class in the game from then until art came along. My proof is the consistent beatings I delivered to giant mercs.

The only exception to the "mercs were the best" rule was Mystra's fist shaman, Ashiya, who could beat Alphrenor (+royal guard) almost half the time if she had all her skills fired. As it was pre-art though, she didn't really have the ability to keep anyone in one place while she fought them.

I'd say your mistake, if there was one, was picking bad spec types.

Alphrenor was one of the better mercs ever if I remember right. I remember he beat a GM paladin, I think it was Lagelli's Paldin, and he only took 1 percent damage. I think the paladin was decently armed and armored. He then beat him again in a rematch and took no damage.

I also remember he beat mitches helf merc keeper + a law NPC 1 vs 2. Alphrenor was outrageously good. If I were to make another fighter it would be a merc
