Post subject: The Action command.(and fly/resting)
PostPosted: Thu May 01, 2008 3:49 pm
Yes this has been brought up a ton. BUT, is this ever going to get tweaked?

IMO fly needs to be changed from how it currently "shows" to other people, it needs to be something like....

Right now it's like this

"Joe is flying here." or something like that.

It needs to be something like this.

"(Flying) Joe is here."

That way you can set actions while flying, without trying to "hide" the fact that you're flying. I think this would seriously up the usage of the command, since not flying can and will get you killed.

-----------

Also, you need to be able to set actions while sitting and resting and possibly sleeping.

Another thing I was thinking about, make them like not permanent, but so that when you set one it stays, like if you set your "sitting" action to "Joe is sitting here cross-legged." it automatically sets it to that every time you sit.

I'd actually like to extend what Syndal is saying even more. Here's what I want too see changed.

One
Currently, action is very limiting because it forces you into a specific pattern.
So, if I were to enter the following, here's what I'd get.
Code:
[HP: 88%] [ME:107%] [PE:100%]
> a a stupid idiot
This is how your action description will appear while standing:
sleeper is a stupid idiot.
Be sure to read 'help action'.

Now, this is really handy when you need to do simple things like "sitting here", or "standing here", but it's really inconvenient when you want to do something more elegant. Why shouldn't I be able to say something like

Code:
[HP: 88%] [ME:107%] [PE:100%]
> a lays here, nursing a broken arm.
This is how your action description will appear while standing:
sleeper lays here, nursing a broken arm.
Be sure to read 'help action'.

While that might not be the best example, it certainly is more elegant and, in my opinion, is certainly a valid action for a game.

Two
I have yet to hear of a damn good reason why you can't have an action while sitting down or resting. While I admit its wouldn't be a huge revelatory thing and magically create a hundred times more RP, it would be yet another tool players could use for RP.

Three
(This also applies to titles too). Personally, I like colors when I play. That's why, usually, everything I do is as non-white as possible. Having an action (and a title) limit is understandable, but making those limits based off the length of the input string, rather than the length of the final result is dumb. To change the color requires two characters, to change a color to something intense requires four. I understand that allowing a lot of extra characters would allow characters to have really obnoxious titles and actions, but it would also allow a lot more creativity and flexibility.

I agree. There are times that I want to be resting in a specific manner...such as leg crossed leaning on an altar, or floating on the ceiling.

I think so that people can tell if you are resting, sitting, or sleeping, the code can just add to the end of the person's action (resting/sitting/sleeping).

Like:

Muktar is laying comfortably here (sitting).

Eh, I'd rather just have the action added after the resting or the sitting. The code already provides the 'is', why not let it handle is sitting or is resting just the same?

>act here, leaning against the wall
Threnody is here, leaning against the wall.
>sit
You sit down.
Your action is now: Threnody is sitting here, leaning against the wall. (See help action)

etc.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeease? *abandons all dignity and begs*

That sounds really nice.

Not just with flying, but with resting and sitting to, as Threnody said.

I'll say it again.

Yes.

I've been waiting for this for a while, but I guess our imms have been too busy wimping everything and not giving us camo on the beach.
