I really don't care either way on this.

Debug: harder to find enemies. You'll only find people who suck at staying out of the way, or who want you to find them.

Keep it: people who don't want to PK are going to be ganked when they least expect it. It makes it difficult to do a lot of things and still stay hidden, and it makes leveling area patrolling much easier.

There will be less PK if we debug the spell? Why? Because you no longer have the ability to exploit this one bug? Oh, get off it. You know you will just find another bug to exploit eventually. Until then, you'll just have to whine, [REDACTED] and moan.

I pointed out facts. This change, bug fix or not depending upon how you look at it, will significantly lower the amount of pk in the mud. The ganking of people who 'hide' all the time has already dropped since scry was nearly completely removed from the game.

I want a lot of pk in this game, as much as possible. If the immortals are able to find a way to make up for the fact that there actually will be noticeable loss if this spell is changed, and the fact that all four classes listed will be massively wimped by this change, I encourage them to change it, since it doesn't make a great deal of sense IC to be able to locate all the 'new' things in the realms.

You are locating what exactly, IC ? Nothing, no argument used. And yet, what you are getting is some of the most 'prized' OOC knowledge due to the way the spell is presently coded. Funk.

A quick band-aid is to make the argument locate return a quick line of 'What do you wish to locate?' without the spell going off. Randomization of the return list of items which you are locating? Not a bad idea. Combining like lines much better than seeing 20 spammed lines. Reduction then of spell from 100 lines to something more reasonable.

I think its absolutely fine. Want to avoid it? Junk everything you leave on the ground its that simple. Also, the person locating has to have a fairly advanced knowledge of the MUD to even know where to find people in most cases.

Its not locate object that ticks me off. I like this function of it.

What does tick me off is people using it to go hunt people in leveling grounds.

I don't care if they're journeymen or mentors, killing ppl that level is about as weak as the allies bombing a civilian site in Dresden, burning 35 square kilometers of a civilian city because it would 'demoralize the enemy'.

Its a totally different scale but its the same mindset :P

I wonder if this thread is going to do more harm than good, given the large amount of people still out there that didn't know about this use. I doubt it gets fixed soon, whose to say it's even bugged for that matter; now everyone knows of it's full uses. :drunk:

I never knew about it, but I am not one to actually use it to screw over people's levelling for it, or to use it to find people with loot just to go out to kill them. If I run into them by chance, that is another story.

I know that I can locate object for bodyparts and rarely do it. I forget why I did it one particular time. I found out people were killing in a couple of different places, both leveling zones. I got asked to go out to one of them to find out who was doing it.

I showed up, I found the person, I sent them on a different path, I left. I did not grief the person, I did not harm the person, I simply roleplayed with them.

Most times, if I show up in an area that is a leveling zone, it is because I am there for something I want or I was told what was going on there. Let me think about this, I'm a principled character, I see someone killing, I report the person to the local authorities. No harm, no foul. The local authorities can decide what to do with the information.

Locate object can tell me when and what people are doing places, but it doesn't mean I am going to go get all huffy towards people who are trying to level.

I can see your point of view Lirimaer, but do you honestly think the playerbase of SK is capable of handling the responsibility of the choice in this matter? Fat f-ing chance. And Ilkaisha, junking everything, even turning auto gold off off so that they don't locate your coin stacks increasing to then 10 minutes later locate the coins repop on the NPC and figuring out where you are, first of all has huge drawbacks in terms of leveling. Leveling without getting any coins is going to screw you over at some point when you die and have to get new stuffs. Also it just isn't enough, if people are persistent enough, and I _know_ some people are, they'll eventually locate the arm you chopped off and couldn't junk before the fight was over, and show up with a gank squad to end you.

The last character I had in ToM for leveling during a peak hour, kept his paladin friend on constant locate duty, locating keys and shards because we simply knew it would only be a matter of time before the cronies of some locater were going to show up and try to wreck our [REDACTED].

All in all, I imagine some of the people who didn't know of this use of the spell as Sypher mentions was the staff themselves, and thus this thread will at least serve to reveal if its current status is intentional or not.
