Just came back to Athens, and I love the original idea!!! Make it so.

Fun! The possibilities are endless, and...I really don't see any negatives to counter.

For showing affiliations...perhaps add a new eq slot? Banner or insignia, which could be used not only to show one's Exemplar, but organizations as well - if one was so inclined - rather like the religious symbol slot.

Any way it's handled, I can't wait to see it in. :)

A tabard would look really good.

I think you could design your own as you do a note?

Hold a design model thing
Right a short description like 'A dark red vestment with a swirling black orb in the center'.
With color and everything.

Also a tabard would be a new slot for eq.

I think this is an excellent idea and one that genuinely gets me thinking about playing a new character for the long term.

My thoughts:

I like the idea of a token that the Exemplar gives to his Cohort(s), this provides the source of their benefits and is worn as a badge of honour, marking their service to their Exemplar. If the token is lost then the boon it provides to both parties is temporarily disbaled.

I know there is concern about people lowbie killing, so make the item 'death rot'. That way there is no reason to kill a cohort just stun him to take the token. This disables the powers and weakens the exemplar. I think the tokens should also rot if not worn (and only the cohorts of the Exemplar can wear them). That way there is no reason to hunt lowbies and gain tokens as trophies. I think if an Exemplar has an enemy then his cohorts should be fair game (to a point). This also means cohorts need to give thought about who they choose as an Exemplar, for an Examplar with many enemies nets the Cohort many too.

An Exemplar should only be able to create a limited number of tokens per day and have a limited number in existence. Therefore, if he is in conflict with an enemy who takes his cohorts tokens, there will be a tempory weakness to him, until he can retrieve or create and re-equip his cohorts.

Would it be possible for an Exemplar and Cohort to be affected by blemishes / enlights that each other recieve (but a PAR exemplar / cohort could not enlight each other)? This would really seal the bond between the two and therefore the actions of one would directly effect the other. I don't know exactly how I would see this working, but if the cohort is enlighted, perhaps the Exemplar could get 10% of the XP and vice versa. Obviously the 10% for the cohort is going to have a much larger impact. Blemishes, I am not so sure about as I don't know how this could affect another.

If the relationship is intrinsically known, how would things such as disguise affect the situation? Would it somehow be tied in more with the greet system/not visible when someone is guised?

Is the relationship to be manditory/hard-coded to the system? Could there be more flexibility where it is something toggled prior to announcement, but unlike the greet command, once the relationship is known, it is not forgotten?

Just a couple thoughts.

I think the bonus should happen when both players are online. I don't want it to be more complicated than that. Once you make the bond, when you are both online, the bond works. After mentor it goes away. After not being used for 2 weeks it goes away.

Agreed. Items are a bad idea. If you want to be known as Slayne's cohort, proclaim yourself as Slayne's cohort. If you're his cohort, good for you: you just got a boost in status. If you're not, then prepare to be about 8-12 inches shorter. If you don't want to be known as Slayne's cohort, don't say you're his cohort. It's that simple.

Bumping this because other people posted related ideas lately and I wanted to make sure this thread didn't get pruned.

This is basically the Leadership feat in D&D.

Taken from the Player's Handbook 3.5 edition page 97

Feat: Leadership
You are the sort of person others want to follow, and you have done some work attempting to recruit cohorts and followers.
Prerequisite: Character level 6th.
Benefit: You can attract loyal companions and devoted followers, subordinates who assist you. Your DM has information on what sort of
cohort and how many followers you can recruit.

No one cares about that nerdy stuff here!

Anyways, I like the idea.
