Not everyone is so hardcore nerd as you, sir.

But if you want to get into common names that slip how about: MOREA, NERINA, UXMAL, EXILE, MENEGROTH, Empire of the Eastern Star (toss Eastern Star into it and you'll see the masonic references), all the god's names are real stars, all the stones are named after norse legends, The grand general infernal (can we say divine comedy?), the black hand, The fists of the white swan (right out of an anime), Paithan's tower (Paithan
also known as The ancient city of Pratishthan, now known as Paithan, was the seat of the Satvahana dynasty who ruled from 2nd century BC to 2nd century AD. it had a huge tower where the wealth of knowledge of the city was kept), Varloch (taken from DnD Larloch, http://home1.inet.tele.dk/ihateyou/warl ... arloch.htm), most of this game is simply a derivative from much more common, prominent things than some stupid talking horse in a 3rd book or some small city in LoTR.

And even Tlaxcala and other main offenses are left out. I never knew about the White Swan, Paithan and Varloch though, but Varloch did seem vaguely familiar. True originality on all fronts, though, is an extreme challenge to meet, so I never busted chops about it.

Which brings us back to my original point. Why have a rule that is not enforced?

Let's not forget Menzoberranzan. Er, Ch'zzrym. I love that area/theme though, so I am not complaining at all.

That's my point, really: who cares as long as its not painfully obvious?

I personally think unoriginal names bring a fresh humor into the game that I appreciate.

Well for instance I never had a problem with Larry, or Kiev (a city in Russia), or Benjamin. Hell someone could roll a deep-elf swashie named Drizzt and it wouldn't phase me one bit because I think Drizzt is awesome. I understand this may bug some of the more hardcore RPers. I suppose for some reason or another seeing an unoriginal name completely throws them off their game or something and ruins the game for them. For me though I get a good chuckle and remember its just a name. I've played a swashie named Ghustaph before, pretty sure thats about as unoriginal as it gets but the name is awesome and it seemed to fit him well.

The problem for me is when it doesn't fit the general "theme" of the name. Like is someone made a human dark aura priest named Drizzt.

If Bree is a centaur, then I have no problems with that ether. That would be close enough to a talking horse I suppose.
