I wanted to screw with hellion skills the other day to run some tests. I named my hellion Dhavik. . . .

ZOMG! the KotOR!

Really. I'm an advocate of the keyboard headbang, but seriously . . . . Flajfedds is NOT a name. Period.

Coming up with a completely original name is difficult. Personally, I look past the name and see the character behind it that sets the name for THIS world.

Look at the real world for example. John Miller is a common name, but is every John Miller out there exactly like? Of course not, you may have a John Miller with red hair, a mustache who works in a cubicle, or you may have a John miller with black hair who is a seriel killer. Originality doesn't really exist much anymore. It's incredibly tough to pull off a name or description that hasn't already been done SOMEWHERE in some story. I think for one, yes they should lighten up on the names as long as it fits the fantasy type of the game.

As was stated above, you shouldn't see a Human named Drizz't or so..As long as the shoe fits and all...You know.

On a more serious note, this argument is a bit moot anyway. Even known fantasy artists who pass off their work as "original" have blatantly ripped off mythological names, figures and creatures. Woe to us, if we were to track down all sources of inspiration.

Also, I seriously loathe Drizzt. What a f'cking crybaby. Bah.

Lolth, you should give it up and name your next one Sockacles.

Almost sounds Greek.

Aristophanes, Socrates. . . . Sockacles.

I agree. I am perfectly willing to debate the valid nature of the rule, but really my point was why do we have a rule we don't use anymore.

Stratford - What does that have to do with the topic if the thread? Maybe you are just to scared to answer the PM I sent you about this thread and wanted to make a public jab at me. Way to really prove you pked me. Wow. Your so cool.

Coming up with a fantasy name is uber easy, seriously. It's something I tend to place some effort into, the cooler my character's name the more I'm gonna like him, sort of like a coolness factor. It's not really hard, just find a fantasy name generator site, or just connect random letters into a name, it's not exactly rocket science.

I guess it depends on your definition of a completely original fantasy name. For example, I got the name Amnemoreth from a combination of two names on a name generator. It is completely original. So, how did I fail then?
