So I was perusing the rogue class, and then perused other classes and it seems that all mages and priests get Detect Hidden as a spell? What is the advantage of playing a stealth class if everyone can see you anyways?

What's the point in playing a 2nd/3rd row class if a rogue can instantly kill you?

Not everybody has DH up all the time, including classes that own it. Issues of concentration and etc. Not that it matters... what's mostly important is getting sneak off and then backstabbing them. If your intention is to "tail" somebody and do reconaissance or something, you are going to have a considerably more difficult time doing that to mages, yes. But unprepared mages do get schooled by rogues pretty handily enough that they deserve to at least see the person who is going to hand their [REDACTED] to them on a platter.

And even when detecting hidden, they are not detecting sneaking - you will still get the jump on them.

Priests do not have detect hidden or invis naturally in their spell set, either. They need to find scrolls or staves that supply them with those spells.

Rogues can also kill the beefiest hp tanks from the outset.

There are upsides and downsides to every class. As any player, there are potions of detect invis and detect hidden that can be quaffed, but the downside is that they cost money, and don't last forever.

Mages, warlocks and necromancers can cast detect invis and detect hidden, no other classes can. The downside to holding this is that it requires a bit of their concentration and also drains some of their mana periodically. The most paranoid characters will have these spells up almost constantly to avoid being caught by surprise, but it will have a downside for them, making everything else they do that much harder.

Sneak, on the other hand, is never detectable if, as a rogue, you aren't flying. Although someone might have detect hidden up and see you if they "look" in a room, they won't see you come in or out if you're walking and sneaking.

Playing a rogue is fun: Many people don't have detect hidden up all the time, and sometimes you can just follow people around for a while. There are also other perks, of course, such as backstab, peek and steal. Hide and sneak aren't the only things you have to look forward to, if you decide to play one and stick with it.

Welcome to the game!
