Okay. This is a bit of an odd idea I know, I am just offering for the consideration of possibilities.

Some cabals faiths and rp backgrounds require some characters to 'never retreat'. As the game works, that's kinda rubbish since any loss in advantage during a battle situation can be restored by running away and preparing.

So what if there was an actual oath system, where a character who makes an oath is thereby bound to it and gains bonuses for as long as he keeps the vow, and loses them, possibly permanently should he break it.

An example that popped to mind was 'no retreat' (which would actually allow you to retreat via the command, but not flee. Silly I know, but its better than calling it 'No running away like a girl' or some such.)

What 'no retreat' could grant is a series of combat bonuses, resistances, hit points, when the character is facing more than one enemy, or a group of enemies that outnumbers his own. The requirement of course, would be to never use the flee command or use an escape item while fighting anything.
Yep these characters would be amazingly prone to ganking but, nobody said the path of no retreat is an easy one.

Other oaths could include:
Vow of poverty
Vow of nonviolence
Vow of never-drinking, whatever that's called.

And yeah, vows are generally a lightie thing, but by changing the word to 'pledge' or 'pact'(infernal?) you can find several cool things such as

Pledge of domination
Pledge of bloodshed..

If it sounds interesting to anyone else than me, perhaps I'll try to think of some more.

I think the majority of people that end up keeping these bonuses are the people who rarely go into combat, i.e. people who stay in HQs or don't really leave their cities or such, but it might be interesting.

the point is that the people who take these oaths as it is now end up locking themselves up. There's little merit to taking such oaths as it is now, as RP in the mud has grown less and less rewarding of late as I see it. Its an idea to reward those who like to walk the 'hard' path instead of just limiting them.

They say the hard road is the most rewarding but as it is now, the reward you're supposedly reaping is rarely, if ever there.

To me the muds RP has grown immensely recently.

I'd like to see rewards for following a path as you've suggested, but I would hate to see such hard-coded.

hmmm.. i actually like this idea.
Additionally you could add morale bonus for people in the same party as someone with this oath.
