Yeah. Keep in mind that all the information on the who list is considered in character information. So those titles after people's names are things you know about that character (think of it as rumors, or hearing them referred that way through the grapevine). So whatever your concept may be, look for someone with a title that you think would help you and feel free to contact them. Heck, there's no harm in contacting ANYONE on the who list for help. Eventually, you'll find someone to help you. A good list of words to look for in titles though are "mentor, teacher, tutor, instructor, ect" these are people who WANT people to contact them for help. The more people you meet, the easier it will be for you to find places to train, equipment to wear, and get back to life (priests are your friend!) Who knows, you might even find a buddy to explore with.

And don't feel bad about asking for help. This was the first MUD I ever played and it took me a really long time to get the hang of it. I don't think I ever would have if my husband and his friends and other people in the game hadn't been so helpful.

If you're still learning the game and getting used to the way things work, I'd personally recommend role-playing the "newb" aspect to the hilt. People are more helpful than you might think, even the dark-auras, under the right circumstances. So long as you're respectful and open to learning new stuff. For that kind of role, I'd go with a bland, naive young half-elf, or an uneducated backwater giant, neutral or as neutral as you can get in alignment. These kinds character types allow you to learn some of the ins and outs of the game without running afoul as easily of the good vs. evil and racial enmity conflicts.

I think this is REALLY good advice.

I'm going to do that and try to rp dark after I learn more. I think that is probably the best, thank you.

SK Character: Retired Troll
I don't think you have to start fresh with a new character. As long as you're respectful, just about anyone will help you if you send them a tell, regardless of aura. As long as your adjective isn't "evil," and your title isn't "xxx - I Slaughter Innocents," people will look the other way to help a lowbie out. That's assuming you're not a deep-elf and not a necromancer.

I would recommend playing a character who isn't too shy to ask for help. That will make learning the game much easier.

Welcome to SK.

Maybe you have read it by now but if not check the "help death" and its linked help files. It will give you an overview of all the methods of returning to life and their advantages/disadvantages/penalties. Even if there are no priests there are other ways (and classes that can help you) to leave the river. So as long as you see people on the who list, it's better to contact them for help, be it priests or not.

My recommendation is to find a leveling partner your level who is more familiar with the game that can take you around places so you don't have such a big issue with dieing. Then you might get a better feel for the game which will make solo leveling and doing other things easier.

That's another good idea, fridge, but it requires the same initiative to speak to other people in the realm who you might not know. Like if you're resurrected, you can ask the priest who helped you if he or she might know someone of the same skill level as you. Inns are swimming with people, and you can always ask someone there, or even forge a friendship or two.

I've seen people set their titles to something Like "Apprentice Seeking Partner" or whatever. I have no idea if this works though. Hanging out in inns usually works for me, or I'll just stumble upon someone in the area I'm leveling in and ask them if they want to group up (I don't group up often though because I'm almost always leveling while doing homework which means a lot of random AFK time).

Aneira's response reminded me of something:

I get very shy about sending tells to people I don't know (even some I do know). I always feel that I'm interrupting, bothering, or out of place somehow about it.

When I decided on the religion I wanted, I set my title to reflect that I was seeking that religion, and the high follower of my chosen faith contacted ME. I've found that joining a religion lets you meet a lot more people, for good or for bad, and often provides you with allies based solely upon a shared or allied faith. I don't know if that's always true, but it was true for me.

So that's something to consider too, as a way to meet more people and find help within the game. It has helped me a lot.
