A few people mentioned how much of a drag it is leveling a character with horrid CHA in another thread recently - I've noticed it just dropping down to 17 from 24, so I can't really imagine having 10 or less. Is there any good reason why we couldn't let people's exp gain be based off modded CHA rather than unmodded? With exp being sort of an OOC mechanic as is, I can't see any IC drawback to the idea; if anything, you'd think exp gain would be based off INT, as ugly, uncharismatic, smart people tend to learn just as quickly as charming people.

That is because Charming people tend to CHARM smart people to either help them or do their work . 8)

Because of the new XP requirement per level.. familiarity sucks.

I got half a level and knew the area like the back of my hand. Lame, plz change.

Even if it was based on modded experience a character with very low max charisma is still going to have a hard time leveling. I won't touch a griffon with less than max charisma and even then I can't stand to keep it beyond initiate. In some ways it's a nice stat addition, but when it comes to leveling I've always hated it. Better were the pre-charisma days.

from my experience, having higher charisma helps, there's enough areas in the game for grays and dark characters, just got to move around more

if modding charisma helped it would become an obsolete stat for leveling for obvious reasons ><

familiar level is calculated something like this:

familiarity = (amount of exp gained for that status) / (amount of exp gained in that area)

as the number reaches closer to '1', familiar level becomes red, having higher charisma gets there faster, but it's not a bad thing as long as there's other areas to go to

in general it's better to have more areas in SK, there needs a lot more, and faster respawn rates, but there's only so many builders, so

Lets just get rid of area exp, and im being serious, how can you get to familiar with hacking THIS person to pieces??? Its a drag, and leveling sucks now. Dont get persuaded by a few who say leveling isnt hard, those are people that have been playing for a very long time and know the secrets to it.

Familiarity has only made leveling easier in many instances. Get out and explore. Charisma is fine. Train in it for faster XP gain. Leveling is nearly perfect at this point. If its that hard, maybe its time to get some help from someone. Ask a vet, see if they'll create a character with you to learn. Or just create a character with the intentions of learning how and where to level. Even if its vaguely OOC to plan, it is pretty easy to find a role that will fit, especially with gray aura characters. Griffons do have it pretty crappy, but early on nothing beats a griffon.

A character I would recommend making for purely learning purposes is either a human mercenary or sorcerer (correct spelling ftw :P).

Humans are incredibly versatile, so no matter what alignment you pick, you at least won't be discriminated against for your race as you would with a griffon or deep-elf.

Mercenaries are physical powerful and easily built stat-wise, and while sorcerers may be a bit difficult to level at first for some, it gets easier over time. They're easily built stat-wise, as well, and they also get some great spells for transportation, and the spell identify will help you get familiar with information regarding weapons, armor, and other random items you find.

There was actually a thread about advice for the best race/class combos for newbies, wasn't there? I can't remember if it was here or another SK forum.

actually for a learning, first character, having infravision is a huge plus

it helps the character in so many ways it's invaluable

Charisma needs to affect something to be a more useful stat for people other then just bards, and for ordering pets. Although I hate how xp is tied to that stat since it has to be unmoded charisma, I don't have any suggestions on what value to place on it other then xp. I'd personally like to be able to mod it, but I'm sure there is coding issues or some crap that prevents it.

Speaking on leveling, did dwarves a while back lose the thing that made them train slower while I was away? I can't find it in the help file, but I know it used to be there.
