Undead > Pets, Id only use like 2 or 3 undead though, If I were you.
You get a little exp from the damage your undead does, so its better than a pet which you dont get the exp from their damage.
On a note, if you level with undead, be VERY mindful of your surroundings. Take it from someone who knows from experience, that most lighties, when they see a necromancer walking around with undead, they have no hesitation killing a lowbie. My first necromancer before I made my current one was slaughtered at Initiate in Zhenshi lands outside of nerina near the stones for just having a skeleton. Also, depending on the player, they'll not only keep tabs on you but make sure they PK you at every chance they get. Just an FYI
