PDF I can do easy. I have a PrinttoPDF program. Any program with a print option can make a PDF. :)

Why not just make it a contest for who can make the most impressive map set?

The more maps the better. There's nothing cooler then finding an old treasure map. A map of the necropolis would be awsome.

Maybe even a map that would work with the sextant, and help show an exact locations, using coordinates, but with just a map of the geography, not the roads or cities, or something that would allow you to mark your location on the map, like a new found temple or an area of intrest for said char.

And maybe even the possibility to share map locations with other chars, for newbs, so that the vets can set up markers on the map for training.

Nothing but hate for the OOC hookups...

Image Format?
PNG image format preferred, or BMP if you can't make a proper PNG. Anything lossy like JPG is a waste for maps that have the 'zMUD' look and feel.

Which Maps?
If you can use the same style of mapping as the citymap images currently hosted on the website, then we only need Kol's Moot + whatever other maps shown are obselete (I'm not across recent newbie area rebuilding projects, for example).

Style of Mapping
I won't be doing any mix-and-match hosting of maps that different from maps we already display - consistency is the important. HOWEVER, while I strongly discourage anyone from attempting to do so, IF someone is willing to redo EVERY citymap (each starting city + its newbie zone) in a new style, then I'd happily replace the whole set in one go.

Mapping styles of interest could be a parchment background; stylised buildings and themes; 3D perspective map (stylised only). If you're interested in heading down this track, think very carefully about how long it will take and whether you have the time to complete the work + adjust for feedback. And most importantly submit a small sample early so you don't spent 3 months working without any guidelines or feedback.

Anyone know how I can save these bitmaps as jpg without this problem?

JPG is a lossy format, which is causing the speckling/dithering you're describing; better used for photos. For these maps, use the PNG format, provided you're not seeing dithering (earlier implementations implemented PNG badly).

Re. browser support - if we have any reports of problems a decent program can save it as an indexed GIF (preferably lossless, depending on how many colours). PNG images aren't problematic in the current era of browsers though.
