Yeah, you totally intimidate anyone that tries to attack you regardless of where you are in formation. In fact, a hellion sitting in the back with a crossbow is probably one of the most frustrating things in the entire world.

This has been like this for years though (since before Slayne), so I'm not sure if it's a bug or if the helpfile is just wrong.

Based on what I've learned with my own characters, I came to the conclusion that intimidate works on anyone in the room... you know, anyone within the dark knight's intimidating glare. if "ranged combat range" is multi-room, then you could really butcher the whole thing by saying melee range includes back row

I think the help file is just wrong, and by "melee range" they meant "in the same room."

circle stabs can only be done after battle has started.

my point was, that circle stabbing is a melee attack.. therefore you must be in melee range. By the same token.. before combat is initiated, backstab is also a melee attack. (intimidating with your back turned, Hellions work those thigh masters!)

which means Baldric and Grep are both right and wrong. If your in the same room your in melee range but if someone is standing in front of them they are 'well guarded'. Is the wording confusing? Sure. Is it wrong? Not necessarily.

It's all moot because it works on spells and brandishing too.

True! I think that's because.. it's sort of like the hellions answer to sanctuary. You don't get the fun damage reduction but the person being intimidated doesn't get to attempt another attack for awhile either. Give a little, get a little.

It's imperfect but what isn't? There are tricks to getting around both intimidate and sanctuary.

I hear that prostrating yourself to me instead of attacking is a good way to keep from being intimidated.
