There is always a risk, perhaps you were simply getting lucky.

I would highly encourage you to pay attention to all variables during a "really good" enchanting run and compare them to your situation when you're not finding much success.

On my recent sorceress I was almost certain of a few key things she needed to do or have or be to guarantee the most successful enchants possible.

Generally speaking, with time, any enchantment is possible. The law of large numbers, however, has no correlation to fun.

I'd recommend one of the following approaches:

1: Ongoing Process: Start with two of an item. Enchant back and forth until one fades or explodes, then wear the other. Get another, third copy of the item and try to make it better than the one you've got, never touching the one you wear. Do this over and over until you reach your goal.

2: Set Goals: Start with a goal, like "25 to willpower, 5 or less resist" and enchant an item over and over until it meets your specifications.

I've gotten anywhere from 4 to 14 enchantments on the same exact item before. There's a great deal of inexplicable variance in the process.

Grep is right about getting more than one item... even mediocre stuff can be enchanted up pretty nice if you spend a lot of time and are willing to lose a few items.

With all these hunters running around, skinning dragons should be a pretty standard thing. I think even mithril's not bad for a heavy armor class. I don't know how a merc or barb would do in some decent mithril if they didn't have any adamantite available. I'd even wonder how some dragonscale would stack up as well. Especially with stance defensive and MV on dragonscale.

I've noticed that there are times when you do incredibly well while enchanting and times when you just aren't so lucky.

That's because SK uses a RNG program. Current computers are completely incapable of rendering random solutions. This is why there are high points and low points.

If you study human behavior at all you know that we tend to see patterns even when there are none. Even if the numbers were really random, it would seem like there are high and low spots. Our brains are just rigged like that.

With the way enchanting is, the only thing that makes it remotely tolerable is the mind games of trying to figure out what mystery factors make it work more in your favor.

But that minigame quickly turns into a huge annoyance when enchanting isn't the game you want to play of itself, but rather, a prerequisite for playing the game you want.

It's just your brain playing tricks on you. Even if there was a pattern, the same random number generator is being used for everyone in the game, so "the pattern" sequence would be broken up amongst all other people enchanting and fighting all over the game.
