Interesting. I didn't have anything happen to my str or dex on either of my last two age ticked priests.

I'm thinking it's just the max that is affected on both side. The only time you'll lose str/dex/con is when you have the racial max.

I know that's what I thought, but Edoras is saying otherwise, hence the discussion.

Grep's nice graphs notwithstanding, that post seems a little misinformed.

Physical stats (STR, DEX, CON) lower in CURRENT AND MAXIMUM capacity at age ticks.

This is wrong. I've played plenty of characters past their age tick. Only the ceiling is lowered, which makes sense. Your body just can't keep up the demands of someone younger than you, you don't suddenly lose your ability to lift 225/325 lbs from aging, no more than you actually become smarter or wiser with age without investing the time and effort into those things.

I would think it quite awkward if I were benching 200 lbs the day before my 45th birthday and then suddenly I could no longer benchpress that much.

I think there's much theory that can be discussed around the concept of age ticks and stat distribution.

You lose the ability to get your strength as high as it was with mods, but you can max it back out with giant strength temporarily.

And uh... since when do you lose Dex and Con? News to me if the answer is always.

(This post is for newbies)

Giant strength and other such spells are an interesting case.

Depending on caster level, you get varying tangible benefits, but under all cases, your ceiling is raised by 5 points.

For example, a young human sorcerer with 15 strength:
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●○○○○○◌◌◌◌◌

Has Giant Strength cast upon her by a very low level caster:
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●○○○○○○○○○

Or, alternatively, by a very powerful caster:
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●○○○○

Note that in either case, the ceiling has been raised to the universal maximum, but the actual score varies.

Since higher-level buffs give you longer fatigues afterwords, it is worthwhile to consider how to use this mechanic alongside careful equipment selection to best benefit your character for whatever your situation happens to be.

For example:
A young human shaman with 16 natural strength:
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●○○○○◌◌◌◌◌
Puts on a four moderately-enchanted magical items from a certain reliable source, but only benefits from +4 out of a potential +8 strength due to the human racial maximum:
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●◌◌◌◌◌
And then partakes of a very weak, cheap, and available source of giant strength:
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●

This gives the same benefit as wearing two of the magical items and partaking of a higher-level version of the same spell, but with less fatigue after. The price is being committed to wearing those items instead of other enchantments, but this can be the foundation of a reliable and economic strategy.

You lose a little STR, DEX, and CON at various age ticks, but I don't remember which you lose when. I don't think you lose all three at each tick.

Well speaking for my current characters, they've both lost all three at their age ticks.. Str and dex for sure, and I'm pretty sure con judging by con dropping a tier with fatigue when it didn't used to.

... Can I be the first to say that perhaps the age ticks are a little rough on the melee classes?

Though I will admit that the recent idea to give mercenaries an extra specialize for age tick was great.
