Dual parry is a skill that allows swashbucklers to parry incoming attacks from normally unparryable weapons using both of their wielded weapons. This sort of parry does not trigger a riposte. Additionally, it allows them to deflect incoming arrows or bolts.

Problem solved.. I guess.

Swashbucklers have 23 abilities, the least of all classes, and less than one-third of those need input from the character to fire.

Rogues have all but 6 of the swashbuckler's skills.

I think the best way to improve swashbuckler is to remove it.

Allow rogues to have all alignments, but lawful rogues lose the following:
steal/plant
disguise
backstab
dual backstab
circle stab
third attack

and gain:
dual wield
kick
taunt
finesse
enhanced parry
riposte

Or something along those lines. If rogues have d6 hit dice and swashbucklers have d8s or whatever, changing that might also be warranted as lawful rogues would essentially be front-line rogues. Unlawful rogues do things from behind. More or less.

Here's the "differences" version of the two classes, for anyone who wants to make their own admixture:

Code:
Swashbuckler:
Amateur
                                               dual wield

Truth be told, I necro'd this thread because I found it very odd that nothing ever came from this. Dulrik was the one who initiated the thing, many things were discussed, many ideas presented, a good number of those ideas were good and Dulrik even liked them, yet.. nothing ever came from it.

Yeah, it's true - I had forgotten all about this thread. Looking at the thread start date, I think it had something to do with the rocky economy causing various RL issues for me in the first quarter of 2009.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about all these ideas and will be pondering where to go with them.

I didn't scroll through the whole previous 12 pages before the bump, but looking through the reposted summerized ideas my favorites are as follows. Not really in any particular order

1) Aiming to cut off a particular body part. This idea is so neat in my mind, and I admit I am a bit surprised that it was not brought up before this swashie thread. Although maybe there just wasn't a venue for it.

2) Cannibal's idea where when the swashie walks into the room they have the chance of drawing everyone's gaze to them thereby giving the others in their group what appears to equate to sneak.

3) Dual wielding any weapon- Although I think honestly it would be absolutely hilarious to see a swashie dual wield two bandalores from the second row.

I'll see about coming up with my own idea in a bit.

I think you already can dual wield bandalores.

Hrm yeah you are probably right due to them being exotics, but either way, the image remains hilarious in my mind especially since they are just yo-yo's.

I'd say swashbucklers are fine just the way they are. Boring, possibly, welcome to melee classes. Weakness to certain types of attacks, sure, welcome to balanced classes. They're a light armor class with reasonable tanking ability. Strong in groups, fair offensive capability as well as defense. If they were to get any type of buff/skill, it shouldn't be anything that enhances their chance of parrying unparryable or parrying arrows/bolts. I can't think of anything that could be added while maintaining balance between classes. How about..dropkick! Only useable as an opener like gore!

My favorite idea for swashbucklers was from a while back: someone suggested that they get a kind of "local lore" skill where they could walk into a city (say the innkeepers) and ask if they've seen a particular pc (could work for npcs too, for purposes of finding items that you've located). The inkeeper then tells them if the pc/npc is currently in the city (or could do by kingdom also).

This would solve a bit for the vastness of SK and the ease of hiding as well as giving swashbucklers some needed non-combat utility.

Skill: Reconnoiter
Syntax: Reconnoiter [PC/NPC Target name]
