Couple things i'm noticing. A hostile spell isn't initiating combat thereby waking up the PC?

The other thing is that the Innkeeper is either really slow, or did not recognize a resisted petrification attempt as an act of attempted murder.

I agree the resisted petrification should have woken the griffon and sent the innkeeper off to report.

Probably true, evena. The three times I've cast it really resulted in oodles of grief.
