Man, this is sad. We finally got WW in the giving, friendly mood (the real friendly mood, not the word filter friendly) - and the first, most eager responses are sarcastic. I honestly can't believe you guys.

Are massive weapons better than non-massive fast 2-handed weapons (see: battle spear) for damage, if you don't have access to fury or specialize?

There's no doubt about it. Now that NPCs can parry with natural weapons, the bonus from massive weaponry means that your character can be hitting more "accurately". I only say that with quotation marks because it doesn't actually boost the accuracy of the weapon. Paladin/hellion are really the only classes that benefit from this much, because classes like scout would be toast in the front row with a greatsword, hell even the paladin and hellion would be toast unless they're not taking damage. It comes down to the fact that parry and shield block suffer negatives against a massive weapon though. So if we left all things equal, say a halberd, and battle spear did a flat 20 damage a hit, the halberd would do more damage per round than the battle spear. This is further compounded by the fact that both weapons without specialize or fury are limited to 3 attacks a round. Unless you're going to go for a really fast weapon like epee/sai, you're never going to see more than 3 attacks with a paladin/hellion/scout, whatever.

I hope this helps clear some stuff up from a guy with a lot of experience with massive weaponry!

this.

how can we expect the vets to not act elitist when we attack them the second they give us an opportunity to learn from them?

WW, thanks for acting like a true vet here. Much respect.

On that note.... WW, jerninx, ardith... I've learned a bit, but just enough mostly to be a danger to myself... are we saying then that unless you're a merc or barb, or sometimes paladin/hellion, massive weapons are useless? That they should really only be used by a furied barb or spec'd by a merc, in which case they should be preferred?
That is, aside from barb/merc, only a pal/hellion can use a reaching subtype that is a massive weapon, and anyone else going front row to use, say, a greatsword, would be toast anyhow (benefit from using a massive weapon is overshadowed by lack of heavy armor, etc). Massive weapons ARE better, but only if you can use a reaching subtype or have the fury/spec and heavy armor to back it up. That about right?

That's a pretty fair assessment of the statement.

Yeah, that seems pretty much right.

i.e. bard/rogue has access to use of greatsword, but really shouldn't ever be using one

If I played a rogue you can bet I would end up using a greatsword every now and then. That'd be sweet.

I use greatsword to level my scout. I tank with him because [REDACTED] having my pet steal my xpees. I level slow enough as it is. It's Pro++.

Your pet isn't really stealing your expees unless you are running out of NPCs.

Well, if you're going to level then weapons like the claymore are better choices.
