It's funny.. in a post I made minutes ago I almost started talking about the lack of respect for other players which seems to be unique to this MUD community. I stopped myself though, so I'm glad to see this topic. Over the years, the times I've ignored the game, it was often for this reason. The OOC atmosphere in the game and on the forums occasionally becomes so pervasive and negative I just can't stand it.

A few bad apples spoils the whole bunch. I agree though, respect goes a long way for everyone. Unfortunately though its hard to pick up later in life if your parents never taught you to have any.

Or you just get tired of trying to play nice and jump on the bandwagon. Only people who can do anything about it arethe imms. I haven't seen much knuckle slapping in a while.

For me it's simple. This is a game. There's absolutely zero reason to let people you do not see face to face on a daily basis have any affect on your life or your personality. I owe nothing to any other players outside of civility and I'm only going to
interact ooc with those who have the same sort of courtesy. Yes I have made friends from the game over the years,
and I'm happy that I can continue to do so, but if someone is a toolbag why are you going to let them screw your day or your enjoyment of the game. It's like letting that jackhole who cut you off in traffic tick you off so much you start taking the bus. Respect is earned...not given. What you are asking for is civil tongues, not respect.

I really dislike the statement that respect is earned and not given. That is a huge problem in today's society.

Person A to Person B: Until you show me some respect, you are a <insert expletive>.

Person B to Person A: Well, until you show me some respect, you are a <insert expletive>.

Give respect until it is proven that they won't reciprocate it. To expect anyone to show you respect before you will show them respect is just silly.

I agree with most of what you said from a real world point of view but in game I think you can disrespect a character while still giving some respect to the player in whatever form you want to. It's just in the roleplay of some characters to disrespect others, just like it's in the character of a bully at school to disrespect people for no other reason other than their own amusement.

True, a char's motives, alignment and personality, dictates whether they will give respect or not. I was talking about OOCly though.

I would like to see two enemies emoting a fight rather than actually pking each other.

I've wanted to see that for so long but the problem is no one wants to be the loser. I tell you what archaic, let's set it up, my physically superior human will get the [REDACTED] beat out of him by your gnome just because I want to do something like that. Oooor maybe we can get creative and have you elemental do the beating OHHH wait, they can't emote can they?
