Can someone please explain to me why half-elf is such a bad race for a sorcerer? Is that a PvP thing or what?

Seriously? A new person to the game asks a perfectly legitimate question and you can't give a deeper answer than 8 chars long? Okay... so half-elves have low intelligence... does that mean they start lower? They max lower than others? Are they just really stupid for all classes or what? Are there no counter-reasons that would make a half-elf worthy of being a sorcerer? I mean seriously... you may have just caused me to restart my ENTIRE character with you single 8-char answer. At least give a little reasoning behind the statement for the benefit of a noob. Thanks =)

Half-elves are the only race for sorcerer that cannot sleep while holding charm person, and charm person is one of the biggest staples for exploration as a sorcerer. Charm person also has heavy mana drain, however, meaning that if you can't sleep while holding it, then it's going to take a long time to regen all your mana while resting.

INT is by far the most important stat for sorcerers in general, aside from charm person. That's why half-elves are the worst choice.

I'd just like to clarify that this information is specifically correct for players without a stock of tokens. There are several races that can now be sorcerers through the loyalty system that would run into the same issues (or even worse ones).

Griffins also cannot sleep with a charm.

Generally speaking, human is preferable if you're considering helf at all. The only real advantage that half elf has is infravision but trades huge drawbacks for that.

Thanks for answering a little more thoroughly guys, at least now I can make an informed decision. I really appreciate it.

Would the same races/ideas that we discussed in this thread hold true for a necromancer as well? If not, then what would be the best race for that type of magic user?

Best is a tricky word, because the behaviors of any given class depend on playstyle. Take two necromancers and you may find very different playstyles.

In addition, best is tricky because people have different definitions of being good. Do you prioritize, say, your ability to hold spells above all else? Do you try to juggle two priorities, such as a hardiness versus combat and the ability to cast spells without stopping?

People will offer tips, but one of the best things to do is think about the actual behaviors you want to do and the circumstances you want to avoid, and try to find their intersection in terms of the strengths and weaknesses it would take for either.

The most viable races for necromancers are generally the most viable for sorcerers, too. The one difference is that halflings cannot be sorcerers without spending loyalty tokens, and elves cannot be necromancers period. Humans, sprites, gnomes (I think), and deep-elves are good for both, each with particular strengths. When in doubt, roll human, unless you're playing a bard.
