Indeed OA it is a very hard thing to get someone to engage in PK on the defensive. It would be nice to have a formal challenge before every PK accept for the run and hide that it actually inspires. Or the gather up my own defenses so its not a fair fight for the attacker. However challenges can be semi open ended aka song and dance means game on until X. X could be next week RL, till one of us is dead. That way you have done your song and dance they can run off for the short term but if they run for all of X then they wont be enjoying their character you will have effectively won.
Nope. According to recent staff policy, every single engagement must be preceded by dinner, dancing, and consent form. There is no "song and dance once to justify a killing later."

I actually think it takes a lot of maturity and practice to over ride your instant reflex to not want to die I know it took a huge mental effort the first time I entered a battle I knew I had no hope of winning. Are the days of Barbs with no range vs necromancers hoards.
No, it doesn't take maturity and practice. It takes an acceptance of and assimilation of the reality that SK does not support a separation between mechanics and RP. The two are functionally two sides of the same coin. It takes practice to not die during mechanics, but then it takes the same to get good at any skill. Players who attempt to willfully force mechanics and RP into two separate entities are actually violating the terms of RP on this game.

However I do not agree you are correct the same penalties ought to apply. I actually think penalties for something you have described should be IC related. If you do the correct RP and then follow though you should be rewarded as the attack thus the defender who fled the fight is penalized. An example a semi rare item sold in their town is no longer sold there if it continues then the item is moved to your base of operations. If you dont do the correct RP and attack you should have your ability to attack hurt so hopefully you learn to do the correct thing.
my two cents
I know from experience this approach has been tried and resulted in no gain. Curses are used to enforce what the staff feels is poor emote/say RP. The same should be used to enforce a failure to live up to the mechanical side of RP.
