I play an Varia an elf who has innate sneak, how can you tell if you are sneaking?
is the message I get yet many times I'm still not sneaking, is there a clear message so we know the skill worked?

Sneak and hide are two skills you're not supposed to be able to tell when they're active on you. As skills, there is a chance they will fail even at mastered.

I'll drop a hint. Sneaking is the art of moving silently. If your equipment would add to the noisiness of your character's movements, you may find sneaking to be less successful.

Humming armor detracts from the chance of you sneaking, and I also think that being over half max weight also makes sneaking less likely to succeed, and perhaps a dex roll. If you just get rid of your humming armor, though, you should sneak almost all the time.

You can do a combo of sneak/hide to tell if you're sneaking. Not so much hiding though...

I don't believe the weight affects the chance to sneak, since I play a scout, I am normally over half my weight all the time...all the time T_T and I never have a problem with sneaking, I might fail once in a blue moon, so I would suggestion get rid of your humming stuff.
