Might sound strange coming from me but I agree that in SK, alignment change should not be a thing that happens very often.
I do however think that under certain circumstances it should be allowed. Often enough in fact that people don't lose their manure (quote copyright of Raahni) if someone prays for months on to request an alignment change. I can't believe how much drama ensued from a simple request through the pray channels made so long ago.
Keep in mind that new players in SK may be unaware of a few things such as, alignment choice being final, alignment restrictions about joining certain factions, the pvp that the 'wrong' alignment will get you in, and so on and so forth.
What I think would be fair to everyone is for alignment change to cost certain LP and be available 1 step up or down for every character over the age of (creation age + X). This shift should never change someone's Aura. Grey will still be grey, etc.
I disagree with this, as I was thinking... why COULDN'T someone of grey aura learn a life lesson that makes them a better person, or, conversely, become a villain (dark aura) due to something super traumatic like watching your wife be killed in front of you, etc? While I am 100% on board with the idea of an evil pc should never be allowed to be good good, and a good pc should be an antihero as opposed to a villain at worst, I think that good or evil should be able to go grey, and grey should be allowed to go good or evil, the extremes should just be off the table, and it would simplify a lot about restrictions that would need to be put on it too, imo.
I generally agree with what you're saying, but not within the world of SK. A good person turning grey in SK might mean that a member of the hammer of light turns grey. And yeah, if he's a member, you just uninduct him. If he's a leader though? And then he starts inducting grey auras in the hammer? What if a deep-elf decides to be grey-aura?
Of course you can start calling restrictions or exceptions but as with code, when you have to make a lot of exceptions you're doing something wrong. You have to accept the game for what it is. Light and Dark are sides to a war that is what more or less drives SK to conflict. I personally think SK is boring without conflict. That doesn't mean that there should be conflict on everything everywhere, but I feel that the lines of light and dark should be clear and not blurred.
Yeah it doesn't make sense that a light aura can RP killing/eating babies and still remain a white aura, but for those cases I'd really prefer seeing 'curses' such as adjective changes, permanent attribute damage, denying the character their abilities through some divine punishment, rather than seeing them change in alignment. Again, this is for SK. If SK was more like dungeons and dragons then sure, alignment changes for the win.
