So I recall seeing something about the individual items you have affecting the hours you need to log to keep them.

And as I'm sitting here fading a crap weapon over and over, I'm wondering if that affects it, or is it a preset, static value that's only on certain items?

Example. A cold iron halberd that is a limited item, but is normally like level 25. If it gets enchanted until it is level 50, is that suddenly affecting how many hours you have to log to keep stuff?

Short answer.
Enchanting/Consecrate should only affect your via level thieves. It is purely level base not hour based.

The best answers I know and can share on the forums at the moment is as follows.
There are two different kind of "thieves".
What are commonly called level thieves. These are effected by the level of the item which increases when enchanted/consecrated. It is not a Boolean value as far as I understand that is to say the higher level the item is compared to your level the greater the chance of losing it. However I believe under normal play it will never be 100% loss. Also there is an item level below which level thieves will not interact with your loot.
The other ones are hoarder thieves. These have two functions. First is to make sure you dont have over a given number of items. All items worn are not counted towards this total. This is checked on log out. This is something you may encounter just getting things to consecrate/enchant.
The second thing these thieves the (H)oarder flag. Which if you are not logged in for X number of hours per month and you have loot that is considered hoard able loot you have all your worn gear checked against the hoarding gear. Then your "loot" gets set. You can not hold items other than those flagged for you as safe until the hoarder flag goes away (one week). I believe the number of hours for the hoarder flag is a set number it does not change it is similar to the Par/leadership flag.

I'll also add I recall reading that your art level affects the ease of enchanting and higher art lowers the chance of exploding an item. Maye the fading would be exploding in another situation? Do you have a high amount of art trains?

I'm not sure either of you are following.

In some thread around here, Dulrik said the more 'leet loot' you have, the more hours you have to log to keep it through the monthly reboot.

The question is, if I enchant low level crap until it's level 50 crap, does that mean I need more hours?

There's always Gameday. It's the day between sunday and monday and the reason I'm always going to work monday walking into doors and answering questions 10 or so minutes after asked with 'what?'
