Archbishop's Quarters
The dark stone walls to the north and east lean upward and inward,
enclosing the dim and cavernous chamber in a distorted ring. The northern
face of the rock pulsates dully, spilling light and heat from somewhere deep
within. This part of the wall appears almost swollen in places, and an
enormous knot in its northern face permits egress into the darkness beyond.
The floor is coated with grey ashes, and rapidly slopes downward to the
south.

Archbishop's Quarters
This place is oppressively dark, save for a hazy red glow that flickers
in and out of existence every few moments. The air is dry, and tastes of
smoke and metal. Each breath one draws is like glass paper in the throat.
Several inches of dull grey ash cover the tilted floor as far as the eye can
see. A dark and sticky stream trickles in from the northwest, pooling at
the chamber's southeast end. The ashes are matted into viscous clumps at
its banks.

A lurid, unsteady glow spills from somewhere north of here, doing more
to stain the air red than to aid ones vision. The air itself is bone-dry,
the floor coated to the depth of a man's ankles with dull grey ash. Even by
what dim light is available, this place appears enormous, and its sheer
emptiness simply adds to the effect. The stone walls are so far apart that
it is nearly impossible to distinguish them from the surrounding darkness.

The Rim of a Steep Tunnel
This curved landing emerges from the face of a wall to the north, in
which a door of radiant red stone stands framed by an irregular arch. A few
steps to the south, the funnel-shaped floor slopes sharply downward, quickly
becoming a nearly vertical drop into a dark room below.

An Upward Bend
A rounded ceiling of black rock stands high overhead, enclosing this
lonely hall like a sunless sky. The floor is horizontal at its chilly
northwestern end, but twists abruptly into a counterclockwise corkscrew at
the other. But for the broad steps that have been carefully carved into the
floor as it rises, it would be impossible to proceed in the latter direction
on foot. Strands of something like petrified ivy cling to the sides of the
stairway.

A Distorted Chamber
A biting chill lingers in the air of this dusty pocket in black rock.
The room appears slightly warped, almost as though its walls have swollen
beyond their original dimensions. The sinewy stone is riddled with bulges
and knots, and an enormous hole stands open in the eastern wall. Directly
opposite this hole, near the center of the room, stands an oddly-shaped
pedestal. Malformed pillars rise in a few corners, supporting a ceiling
whose slope is dramatically irregular.

Dark Lord's Chambers
This appears to be a great hall, stretching from north to south amidst
sinewy stone. Crude arches are just barely visible overhead, stretching
inward as though to support an unseen ceiling. The gloom is positively
oppressive here; even the brightest light seems cold and wan, its very
essence diminished. Near the hall's southern terminus, the floor's swollen
whorls spiral upward to form a three-stepped dais. At its apex, a cold and
flickering shadow clings indelibly to the wall, cast by an absent throne.

A Barren Antechamber
This cold and dusty room is vaguely hexagonal in shape, though the walls
and floor are composed of a dark, striated stone that fits together at
bizarre angles. Huge, warty pillars emerge from each of the hexagon's
vertices, like herniated growths protruding from the rock face. The ceiling
they support is nearly invisible from here, and appears to slope to an even
greater height to the south, along the path of a long, dark hallway. A
second such hallway curves away to the southeast. No other exit is visible.

A Curved Reception Hall
This dusty, cavernous hall almost seems slightly warped or melted. The
walls and floor fit together at curious angles, and sinuous ridges wind
across the unadorned rock face. A line of pillars follows each of the walls
as they curve away to the south and west, supporting a ceiling that is all
but invisible. The vague outlines of various benches and cupboards can be
discerned here and there.

On the Outer Face of the Ebon Spire
This broad ledge juts eastward from an enormous rock face, offering a
dismal view - an endless expanse of fog seems to surround this place. The
miasma lessens in intensity as it nears here, skirting the perimeter of the
spire in a half-cylinder. A ruined city sprawls below, outlined in dim
silhouette on the bed of the foggy sea. A tiny bridge emerges from the
gloom and connects to the base of this massive tower, where even the fog
dares not trespass. It looks like a long way down.

High Priest's Quarters
This small chamber is enclosed in dark and sinewy stone. While its
western wall is nearly flat, the others look far more irregular than even
the walls of a cave. Tattered black curtains hang from the eastern wall,
flanking a large fissure where the contorted stone has given way. A greyish
light spills in through the tunnel beyond, vaguely illuminating this area.
The room has few features, however. A simple bench is carved into the
western wall, and a row of demonic carvings a few yards above it. An
oddly-shaped archway leads beyond the southern wall and into darkness.

Hundreds of tiny carved demons stare inward from the dark stone
surrounding this chamber. Save for a few twisted pillars that jut from
amidst the throng to support the ceiling, the carvings completely obscure
the walls from view. A large circular area in the center of the space has
been left clear. There is otherwise little room to move about at all. A
pair of narrow aisles wind away through the thicket of statuary to the west
and the north.

A Dark Chamber
What appear to be flowing black tapestries hang to the north. The grey
face of a metal door shines faintly amidst them, as though catching the last
of some distant light. Little else seperates this place from absolute
blackness. A crowd of strange and motionless shapes is dimly visible amidst
the shadows.

On an Arc of Black Stone
A column of volcanic rock bends sharply here from its vertical path down
the dizzying circular gap below, connecting to an enormous ledge that
protrudes from the southern wall. A series of broad stairs is carved along
its northern curve, making it possible to proceed downward from here, though
that climb grows more dauntingly steep with each step. A flat ceiling is
visible several yards above; its surface is patterned like oil frozen while
swirling amidst water, and light and shadow flicker dimly from somewhere
overhead through irregular gaps between the sinuous curves in its face.

At the Roots of a Twisting Staircase
Time almost seems to stop as one nears the center of this cavernous hall
- many emotions grow flatter, many thoughts seem more trivial. And at that
central point, a natural peak, like a massive stalagmite, rises from the
stone floor. This great pillar rises high overhead, beyond the limits of
sight, branching out into twisted arms. Surrounding its trunk is a sort of
shallow well, whose rim protrudes from the basalt in a radius of several
yards. An irregular series of stairs begin on the upper face of this low
wall, growing ever closer to the pillar as they ascend; it appears they meet
with it somewhere above.

Northern Drawbridge
This tongue of sinewy black stone appears to emerge from the mouth of an
irregular archway, which is set in the face of the dark and colossal
structure that towers just to the south. The bridge spans a great pit, and
rests amidst sinking ground to the north. An unspeakable smell rises
faintly from underfoot, and the tiny patch of wet earth that rings the black
pillar clings to its sides as though attempting to avoid collapsing into the
deep ravine below. Very little else is visible through the fog, other than
the outline of a large pile of rubble that rises from the pit west of here.

This appears to be the southern end of a broad, stone-tiled boulevard
far sturdier than the swampy earth upon which it stands. The street
continues to the north, between two low earthen hills, its destination
obscured by the fog. The ground drops away to the south at an alarming
rate; it looks as though much of it has collapsed into a deep ravine below.
But what truly dominates the view to the south stands across this narrow
canyon - the cylindrical wall of a great stone structure rises above to an
imperceptible height. A long rectangular slab of something like petrified
wood lies in the sinking ground on this side of the ravine, stretching
southward toward the looming black tower beyond.

Hades Street - Between Two Earthen Hills
The sturdy tiles of this broad paved road stand in contrast to the wet
and fetid clay into which they have been laid. The boulevard cuts a bloody
swath through the sinking ground between two low earthen hills, atop each of
which lies the remains of a damaged square building of dark stone. The
street winds on to the north and south; in the latter direction, something
resembling an enormous, twisted tower climbs into the sky, its pinnacle
thoroughly obscured by fog.

Hades Street - At a Fog-Shrouded Crossroads
Two branches of a broad, tiled boulevard intersect here, forming a
junction that rises from the ground into which they are set. The ground
slopes upward still higher at the angles of this intersection, forming two
low earthen hills, each of them crowned with a building of dark stone. The
east-west section of the street passes the slope of the hills, past a jagged
cluster of ruined buildings to the northwest, and disappears into the fog in
both directions. To the south, the shadowy outline of something like a
massive tower is visible through the murky air, seemingly just beyond the
point where that branch of the road vanishes.

Though it tilts slightly at its edges along with the sinking earth, this
broad paved road stands sturdy, in stark contrast to the expanse of blasted
clay through which it cuts, like a hardened scar rising from slashed skin.
The ground north of the tiled boulevard is fetid and wet, and a copse of
broken buildings juts from it, their odd angles obscuring ones view to the
north and west. Several paces to the south, the muddy ground begins to
slope gradually upward, culminating in a slick earthen hill which
approximately follows the street's western path. Atop this hill, the near
corner of a dark stone building protrudes from the fog; somewhere beyond it
rises the vague outline of a much taller structure.

A jagged chorus of broken walls rises north of here; many of them tilt
away from the street at violent angles that make it hard to imagine which
among them once stood together as part of a single structure. The broad
paved road continues its scar-like path through the sinking earth to the
east and west, passing between these ruined buildings and the slope of a low
earthen hill that stands to the south. The outline of a dark stone
building, which looks from here to be in terrible condition, is visible at
the summit of the hill. A faint red incandescence seems to lightly color
the western sky.

A tall iron fence has been erected to the north, and tendrils of rotten-
looking vegetation entwine its bars from amidst the ruins beyond. The tiled
boulevard forms a crisp angle here, extending south and east from this
corner. An irregular wall of white marble towers over the street,
dominating the view to the west. Its summit is not visible from here, and
its northern edge curves away into the foggy distance, along the southern
side of the fence. Somewhere overhead, the hazy air grows increasingly
stained with a flickering red glow, and the peppery odor of distant smoke
colors the city's perfume of dust and decay.

Hades Street - Before the Rictus Arch
A huge, shadowy archway interrupts the wall of irregular white marble
that towers over the edge of this red-tiled boulevard. Easily several yards
at its height, the curve of the great arch is ringed with colossal blocks of
the same white marble; these appear to have been carved to resemble humanoid
teeth. A faint reddish light stains the fog overhead, beyond where the
stone wall rises out of sight, and a hint of distant smoke colors the city's
perfume of dust and decay. The street itself stretches onward to the north
and south, though it seems to disappear beneath an enormous pile of rubble
in the latter direction. The ground drops sharply to the east, where a
similar heap of rock rises from whatever lies below.

A lingering chill fills this place. The air is heavy, as though with an
unseen, charnel smoke. A yawning gateway stands open to the east; it towers
several yards at its height, its keystone all but obscured by the canopy of
stone arches that support the domed roof overhead. To the west, the earthen
floor slopes gradually downward, disappearing from view in the dim light
between marble pillars.

exposed. Rows of marble pillars stand to the north and south, dividing the
strip of earth from raised aisles of the same stone. The ground slopes
gradually upward to the east. In the opposite direction, it drops away from
sight at an increasingly-severe angle.

Flanked by a pair of high stone walls, this hill of hard earth slopes
ever downward to the west. It eventually reaches a completely vertical
pitch, only a few yards from the point where a third wall rises between the
others. The two are divided by a yawning pit, vaguely oval in shape. A
horrible, rotten stench suffuses the air here.

A Gruesome Pit
This appears to be the base of a vaguely-cylindrical cavity hewn from
the surrounding bedrock as though by some great force. A waxy carpet of
discarded guts and organs obscures the floor here. The enclosing basalt
rises high overhead, slick with gory stains. Slabs of white marble jut from
the rock face like exposed vertebrae, forming a sort of natural staircase
that follows the cavernous walls upward from here. Beyond an arched opening
to the east, a rounded cavern winds away into darkness.

Deep below the earth, here, tepid slime glistens dimly on the fractured
bedrock, mottling its surfaces both slick and tarry, here and there. In
spite of this, they're broad and jagged enough to be scaled by unskilled
climbers with some care. An indescribably-horrid smell is borne upon the
jets of steam that swirl up through the chasm. Their soft wail echoes
eerily in otherwise-dead silence.

open long ago to reveal an almost-cylindrical hole in the bedrock
underneath. Hot steam hisses below, imparting a hollow warmth that does
little to abate the subterranean chill. It is quite effective, however, at
rendering the stinking air even more nauseating for its movement.

passages, having saturated the earth in which they lie entombed. The
substance clings to the old stone walls, and covers the floor in a thick and
chunky stream two or three human handbreaths in height. The air is still,
and a stench of indescribable malignancy hangs heavy upon it - something far
less wholesome somehow than simple rot or decay.
