I would like to start by saying this : Emotes are, in my experienced belief, the difference between quality and poor rp. Emotes allow us to write as a writer would write - they allow us to express matters in great detail - they give us the ability to customize our actions to fit the character of..well..our characters. Socials are silly things used for the briefest of needs - emotes allow us to paint a picture for those in the room with us.

The point of the above was to suggest that emotes are important and should be used often - but the reason for this particular post is to propose a code change that I believe will allow emotes to be more useful by far. That is, simply, that anything within "'s in an emote is changed to represent the language being spoken by the character. I have seen this done. I have also seen "'s to change the color of that which is enclosed by them - so while I do not know code, I know this particular alteration is entirely possible.

Allow me to show a few examples:

Example 1- Social and says

#1 enters.

#1 nods to #2

#2 grunts

#2 says "Hello #1, it's good to see you again."

#2 drinks from a mug.

#1 smiles

#1 says "Thank you."

Example 2 - Emote and says

#1 glides into the room with a graceful stride - flowing through the tables as she approaches #2, giving him a faint nod.

#2 looks up from his beer, smirking faintly in manner that brings the horrid scar on his upper lip into the flickering light of the room. His eyes narrow, and he gives a deep grunt.

#2 says "Hello, #1. It's good to see you again."

#2 lifts his mug to his lips afterward, swallowing from his drink.

#1 stares at the beast of a man curiously for a moment, before a warm smile spreads across her lips.

#1 says "Thank you."

Example 3 : Emotes

#1 glides into the room with a graceful stride - flowing through the tables as she approaches #2, giving him a faint nod

#2 looks up from his beer, smirking faintly in manner that brings the horrid scar on his upper lip into the flickering light of the room. His eyes narrow, and he gives a deep grunt. His cold, thick voice booms through the room as he states with impatience "Hello, #1. It's good to see you again." He lifts the mug to his lips afterward, swallowing from his drink.

#1 stares at the beast of a man curiously for a moment, before a warm smile spreads across her lips. Her musical voice rolls from the smile on her lips as she replies in gentle tones "Thank you."

Let us examine this. Example 1 is boring - you learn a little of the characters. #2 grunts, which is a little rough. #1 smiles - obviously not as much. But that's all you know - that is as much as the picture tells you.

Example 2 paints a much better picture. We now know #2 is a rough man. We can picture him sitting at the table, drinking in the soft candlelight. And really, we could write more, if we were #2 - and express much more of the scene. We also know that #1 is a much more elegant, graceful person - and much nicer. But we still do not know the tone of their conversation.

Example 3 provides this. Not only do the quotes allow the characters to define the vocal quality, it also brings the 'say' into a much better flow and transition with the actions before - and after (#2 was able to act both before and after his words). Not only does this provide a transition and smooth appearance, as well as giving freedom - it also just takes up less space.

I know I am new to this game - I hope my words are not offensive or unwanted - but I would love to be able to rp to the best of my ability with all of you, and having the ability to use quotes within my emotes would allow for this.

Not that I particularly object, but you don't need what you're asking for to include tone of voice.

Code:
emote rolls his eyes before he rumbles gruffly:

say I don't repair elven trash.

emote punctuates his response with a hammer-bang on his anvil.

I grant this isn't as fluid as you discussed. But few players here are going to wait for you to write a paragraph-long emote. It's better to keep them short so you can react in a timely fashion.

Yeah that is my biggest problem. I used to do emotes like that, but after typing it all out, someone else would do another emote that contradicts my emote that comes before mine, just because they finished before me.

I like the style, but unless you set up emote aliases (I have a few) then sometimes you can worked your fingers to little nubs trying to keep up.

Something like this would also make it much easier for bards to write their own songs. I know that a fix like this was requested a long time ago, for that purpose, but was never implemented.

I hate paragraph long emotes. I like them short and concise. A blending of socials and short emotes get your point across and I'm not sitting there twiddling my thumbs while I wait for you to respond.

I suggest you be careful what you put out there, those that put out at least one line of an emote can be called RP [REDACTED] - me included.

Nobody has the patience, and even if you did an emote before you enter the room, people are either hugging you, kissing you or at least welcoming you before you even get to pose in. There isn't much time to create paragraphs that you could possibly other places that are strict RP based and not pk encouraged.

And sadly, from what I can tell, the use of the *socials* is what gets you PAR, not the thought of emotes or the time to do a good desc, or char concept. You wave, you smile, you wink, you clap, any of the socials will get you noticed - not many wish to wait for your one liner of non-social use.

I love when people are capable of creating atmosphere with good emotes. Be it long ones or short and to the point.
I wish I was better at it myself :P
Stacking says and emotes is what I personally do if I want things to seem fluent.

I've had paragon several times on two different characters and I use simple emotes of my own creation. I rarely use the socials, since I find them limiting and often inappropriate. Of course, on my second paragon character I have quite a file of aliased emotes that could be considered my own version of "socials" just for her. But even then, I try to throw in as many simple-to-the-point emotes as possible to suit the situation.

Of course, especially on my second character, a good majority of my enlightenments came from immortals since the paragon flag was heavily centralized in the opposite end of the game from me, thus making paragon interactions rare.

The system isn't perfect, admittedly. But often there are at least several very well deserved paragons around.

[/end defense of paragons]

As for the OP, I'd love to see more versatility with the emotive system, but there is a valid point that long emotes such as your examples would slow the game down way too much. SK is generally very fast paced. There's a certain art to displaying the mood and tone of your character in concrete and concise forms.

Though, I do get sick of the limited "Aneira does this and this" and "Aneira's stuff goes like this".

Eh...I tend to emote a lot, but I generally keep my emotes to two sentences long at a maximum. If you want to emote longer, learn to type much, much faster.

emote smiles.
