Last night I was pked by someone I had never met before over a few worthless items while killing monsters someplace. The person hardly talked to me and only said a few things about my needing a backpack.

I had a feeling that the person might attack me, so I switched to stun mode and then emoted something to indicate that I had done so (I think the emote was "emote flips her sword to defend with the flat of the blade"). After I had done that the person attacked me and knocked off 20-30% of my health each round until he killed me. I had no chance.

What's the point of stun mode if no one's going to use it? I thought it was there to be a way to settle disputes with combat without anyone actually losing experience, especially if there's a big difference in player level.

A lot of lighties will often use mode stun, and even darkies will use it when engaging youngish players. Unfortunately you can't control if the other person stuns or not. From your emote I would not have been able to tell you were stunning - you would have had to say "Let's fight this out! To stun!"

Sadly, it just sounds like you ran into a jerk player. I'm really sorry you had to go through that. I wish people would RP it out more.

If you get resurrected by a priest, you don't lose XP when you die.

And no, nobody uses mode stun.

Its only apparent use is to avoid getting cursed if you're a lightie and get attacked by other lighties.

Melee characters are also at a mechanical disadvantage when on mode stun, since you will 90% of the time stop hurting the other person when they hit 25% hp. You'll keep hitting them, but do no damage, while the other person murders you.

Mode stun is awesome because now with get all on stunned victims you can fly-by loot someone without risking banishment.

This is incorrect. You are still doing damage to their main hit point pool and will put them down on schedule. But it's true that stunning takes more effort than killing. I've seen this misunderstood so much over the years. I think it may be a good idea for the enemy health report to always report the main hit point pool when you are on mode stun, since that's the only pool that matters.

Sounds like that person should be cursed 5 levels.

I wanted to avoid metagaming through emotes so I wrote the emote to show that she would be fighting with the flat side of her blade, meaning that she wouldn't be using the edge. If you hit someone with the flat you're not going to be hurting them so much.

I'm not upset about the incident, I'm just disappointed that my character was pked after an absolute minimum of rp over some worthless items and the person couldn't be bothered reciprocate the courtesy I extended him and switch to stun mode. It's not like there was some big provocative confrontation which led to the pking either, and the items taken from me weren't valuable or important anyway.

I'm also disappointed that when I later encountered the person in an inn, he wouldn't even stay to rp.

Her point stands, though, which is that mode stun is not as effective at defeating an enemy as mode kill. 1) You effectively have to do more damage to finish them off and 2) you miss out on the opportunity to do things like sever limbs, which can be extremely helpful.

I would not suggest making the change you are proposing to hit point visibility because all that will do is obscure the drawbacks of using mode stun from new players.

She deleted? I just don't get why someone dies, and feels the need to delete their character because of it.
