Is this a known bug? I thought this was strange.

Occassionaly when ethereal and a NPC is trying to attack, it tells you "No way, you're fighting!" when you try to leave the area. I wouldn't be surprised that when you saw that she would have been unable to leave at that moment, and perhaps that was what was seen.

Yes, allikat is a known bug to the game. Dulrik has been unable to fix this bug though.
