Rule of thumb I use for saving: when getting new eq, when getting life, when getting eq from my corpse, after gaining a level, and when the game feels like it might crash. I use dialup and don't really notice any more lag than when casting an upper level spell.

I have dial-up and experience lag off and on regardless of when and where I choose to Save *shrugs*.
