Might be like charm person? If you cast charm person and they save against it, you get no message. *shrugs*

It isn't happening with just energy drain, I've seen it with various spells. You cast the spell and receive no message to let you know if it actually did anything.

The NPC saved against it. Energy drain has always been all or nothing. You just got nothing.
