Buxtehude nailed it pretty well, i think. It's a term that means basically focusing all of your time and energy solely on leveling and ignoring the other aspects of the game. It's usually only referred to as power leveling when the player is actually good at it (thus a newbie that only leveled wouldn't be considered "power leveling" by most) and frequently has negative connotations of using exploits, OOC hookups, cheating, etc.

While there's nothing illegal about it (unless you cheat, of course) some people consider it to be wrong. I personally plevel my way to about master with any new char simply because i hate levelling and i hate interrupting other things to level. If somebody tries to rp with me i'll respond in kind but i usually wouldn't head out of my way to find some.

As long as a character behaves in the role it fits, there is no problem with however fast you level. Cheating or using OOC hookups is a problem, but hard to track sometimes. If a player ignores another or is not reacting as the character should in certain situations, in order to continue leveling.

I don't expect players under amateur to have a fully fleshed, described character, but I do expect non-newbie players playing a low level character to fit themselves into the role. Description, adjective, and title other than New to Pyrathia.

I usually leveled up to mentorish and started fully RPing my character as they should be. I usually get into my target cabal by vet or expert. Religions are first priority. Myself I usually always put RP above leveling. I usually level solo, so when I have the chance to interact with others, I take the opportunity.

To me power leveling is for people who hate leveling, and love other aspects of the game. So I myself, like Adder, level as fast as I can, as long as I can in the beginning until I get to a reasonable level, and then begin to enjoy myself. Its quite possible to do so without loot hookups, or people tanking for you, or even exploiting everything. Sure knowledge of what spells to use and where is nice, but I don't really see that as an exploit.

Me currently:
You have played 41 hour(s) so far.
Class: Necromancer
Religion: Dabi (Yes, gasp I managed to rp a bit, althout it was near the end of my plvling spree.
Status: Master

Oh yes I almost forgot, my sick loot:
You are using:
<worn as symbol> (Glowing) a writhing mass of smoke and blood
<worn about body> a large deep purple knapsack (brand new)

(h8 people who kill me in my sleep)

I work out my character concepts and goals before I even roll my character. Aswell as figuring out names, descs and adjs, I do in advance. Stats and the like I might reconsider as I level but usually have a pretty solid idea on how they will be going. So once I do roll the character, leveling is first order of business, and unless rp comes to me I am going to go to master before starting any beef myself. And then follow up to gm very soon messing around with the new character inbetween. If my character has any religion or cabals goals, I make sure to rp towards them asap, and use any opportunity to do so with others.

If you know how to level quickly without cheating, then go for it. Just don't make rp secondary and enjoy it when you can.

Thanks for the replies, all. See, I figured it had something to do with a ratio of RP/XP, and I wanted to know if helping a new character train was pleveling or not.

Much <3 for the intelligent (and quick) replies.

If you're a jerk you'd need ooc hook ups, but most people that do it know how to do so by completly legal means. A lot of people don't however and assume that if you can then you're doing something wrong.

Helping out a newb might result in that newb power leveling. There's no reason not to do this as that the quicker they reach a high enough level to do something, then they can help you out right on back.

I absolutly abhor leveling personally, and I hate mastering skills, I wish I could create a GM with mastered everything and just get to the rp'ing. Leveling a chore for me, its like having to wash the dishes so i can go play. So I generally spend the first 30 hours of my character hitting master. Then I can do some serious rp without having to worry about stopping to level so i can rp with said cabal or go kill said invader of the city..ect ect ect ect

The definition of power-levelling, to me:

Forsaking your role/forsaking roleplay in general in order to level. I truly don't consider time a factor in it, so far as this requirement as met, levelling is clean to me (barring out-of-character equipment hookups).
