If I try that...

Specify the range of the spell.

Code:

I would think that you should be able to target a distance from you to hit the room itself.

This may sound dumb but does your warlock have infravision or does it wear glowing items?

if there is anything in the room at all that can be hit by the fireball, it should cast it...it may be that the room is completly empty.

I believe it has to do with the fact that the room is dark. So he can't seen in the room south of him. Thus he can't even target the room.

IE. I look in a dark room and see nothing. I don't know where to throw my fireball because I can't see anything. Fireball is a spell, unlike a grenade (which you could just toss in a room) where you have to have a point of reference for it to cast.

Ok that kinda makes sense...I'll give that a try...

I disagree. When you are in combat you can be blinded via darkness/dirt/the spell and still be able to cast magic against the one you are in combat with. I'm pretty sure while blinded you can even cast fireball a direction and just target the room, so long as there actually is someone in that room...I will test this as well.

There was a bug a few months ago with such spells like fireball when the caster could not see in that room he was targetting.

The bug was fixed at the next update, although lately somehow all these fixes are gone and things are buggy again.

It seems unlikely to me that the fixes are gone. Maybe you can list the exact things you think have been re-broken and I can confirm if the code intended to fix it is still in place.
