You kingdom usually is based off of race. First do you know if you want to be a good/selfish/evil person? That will help limit the field

As I understand, [Edit: Effective] priests are often races well known for being really smart. Elves, humans... to name a few. Certain races that live in caves and like shiny axes can be difficult to use. But really, whatever you visualize yourself as. The same for the good/bad question. Whatever you feel like this guy would do.

Elven/delven priests I heard are really good but they have some drawbacks:
They must be good(elven) or evil(non-elven)
sucky con
vulnerable to many different types of weapons: Iron, negative(elves), positive(delves)
vulnerable to poison

Humans are also really good but here are their drawbacks:
No infravision(no biggy for a priest)
Not as high int as elves/delves
Shorter life-span

I also heard Centaurs make decent priests but their drawbacks are:
They are toasted completely by fire magic(Magma spray owns them)
They don't have leg guards

My point is you need to do some elimination on a concept. Most races do fairly well as a priest. Only exception would be Giants, but I don't think they can be one. Dwarves also, are kinda hindered also because of their low intelligence but theirs can be overcome.

The priest class is one of the few that I believe has good opportunities for every race. Gnomes have a huge mana supply, halflings can hide and sneak, elves have good intelligence, level fast, and can sneak, humans and half-elves have few if any weaknesses, dwarves and griffons can be great melee priests, etc.

My recommendation for a new character is either a gnome, a human, or an elf.

A priest is a good class to learn the game - people will want to talk to you, since you'll be able to heal them (and eventually, resurrect them).

I would recommend reading up on roleplay and some of the etiquette and 'good playing/typing' style posts - you might find them a handy reference, since as a priest you'll be interacting with many characters - light and dark aura as well as grey.

Some of the races with intelligence and/or size limits might be a challenge for someone new to the game - I'd recommend a medium size race to learn the ropes (human/elf).

Most races make a good priest. As a general rule, the priest class is just a good, solid, well-balanced class, both powerful and loaded with utility.

I prefer gnomes, humans, halflings, or centaurs as priests. They have good stats for the class and do really well.

Elves/deep-elves are okay. But their stats aren't best for the priest class, and they just have too many other drawbacks. Their main benefit as priests are good INT and therefore good concentration. Deep-elf has the highest concentration (can hold/cast the most spells at one time) of any non-aged race in the game.

Griffons make good priests. Especially in the Fists. But somehow it seems like such a shame to play an enchanting class as a griffon. Seems to throw away one of your most powerful spells, due to a lack of eq slots.

As a priest, I personally avoid dwarves and half-elves. Ultimately when it comes down to it, these are the worst for priests... and if you want to play one of those two races, they do almost every profession better than priest.
