If for some reason at the passing of a tick you are not in the same room as the NPC(and the NPC is NOT inside the area that it repops, Exile for this example), the NPC WILL dissapear. It will try to do a virtual "Y walks west"(or perhaps 2-3, as much as it has time to do till the tick) and then instantly dissapear.
You can do a test if you want, take a law NPC outside and do a eject NPC; fol NPC. You will follow a NPC one room or two and then it will be gone.
I know NPCs will basically auto destruct a few moments after crossing the border, if you have them in group, they will stop following you and then you'll get a member of your party has left your group or something like that. Just in this case the summoned NPC wasn't even in group to see this so he auto destructed and returned to Exile.
