Just because it is true to life doesnt make it improve the game. Yes in history people might not have had contact with a horse to learn to ride. Guess what in History people couldnt communicate mentally across the world.
Ride skill will make SK less newbi friend. I ask what is the point of it beyond that?

How about, no? I don't see what possible connection you could make with the ride skill costing more pe then just riding. If anything the ride skill would reduce the pe cost of using a horse for both horse and rider. As for making the mud less newbi friendly it would do just the opposite, read on.

Now that you brought this up I can see horses being used untrained but at the normal pe cost, where as a skilled rider would reduce the pe cost for for both horse and rider. It would effectively reduce the PE cost for each speed walking, trotting, and galloping. So you could actually hop on a horse and ride someone down across the desert or what ever just like in stories like; "Black Colossus." That's probably exactly how it should work. Also on a failed skill roll you'd be force to stop your overland travel for a round.

I wouldn't have normally said this, but around here with people like Silmar I guess I have to. If a newbie trains the riding skill, it will actually make it easier for him to travel because the newbie, with a mount, would use less pe, then an untrained newbie on a mount. So there's a crap paragraph for all you who follow the herd and don't think.

Deep down, I think this skill isn't in the game already because it's probably going to come in some form as a trade skill in the future. Maybe a charioteer or wagon driver skill. I don't know. Dulrik said he wants ships and vehicles in the game.

I mean in a world where people can pick up fifty objects at once off the ground with a simple get all comand shouldn't you just be able to type kill so and so and your character wear what ever weapon was in his inventory and do it? You shouldn't have to equip him yourself he should draw his own weapon as part of the kill command.

That's a pretty low argument. The argument was *previously* made that riding should be inherent to everyone because riding was more common in the past. It is simply being refuted as a good enough reason for making riding inherent.

As for the usual "they couldnt communicate via tells either" (no but does that make you want to accept cars or microwaves too, in the name of "SK reality isnt that of the past"?), there is a difference between SK realism and ancient realism yes, which is why I would like to see any sort of SK-culture-related arguments for why everyone would know how to ride. Apart from sheer laziness on behalf of players, I don't see any at all.

Newbie help? True newbies would either have help to move about, or not have to move further than immediately outside their city to get their next levels. When newbies are ready to buy a mount, they sure as hell should be ready to know how to train riding.

We accept that we have to learn the languages of other nations, and noone complains about it being mean to newbies. We accept that they have to learn *their most basic skills* by training - skills they would have to use WAY before riding.

In the game world certain assumptions are made. As an adventuring character everyone knows how to ride a mount, in Pyrathia we're not run of the mill people, we're the cream of the crop the best of the best at what we do, riding is a horse is simple when you can slay a demon.

Certain races get skills inherently such as boulder for giants, or even innate self defense for griffons. With your arguement you're saying that there is a possibility that some characters haven't actually learned these skills so they too should have to train them.

You have to accept certain things about the game world. Truth be told the only reason I could see for adding a riding skill is that the skill when mastered allows for you to move with no PE cost while mounted. I've ridden a horse countless times and have taught basic riding, anyone can do it, it just takes effort to do it well.

I just love how dwarves, gnomes, and halflings can ride on camels just fine. ;)

How the hell do they get up there?

No to riding skill.

I knew how to ride horses at a competion level by the time I was six.

Gnomes, dwarves, and halflings have a vertical leap beyond all measurment. Tis, why their civilazations are so advanced. They also 9....billion dimensions though you can only see two. It's swimming that gets em!

I'm in favor of more horses. For instance, maybe a charge skill for mercs, pallys, and hellions? That way, there could be some really awesome jousting fights that could take place.

And in response to the I'm-a-noble-of-course-I-could-ride-horses-by-the-time-I-was-six thing--if you were a noble with such hot education, wouldn't you be speaking more than one tongue? Delves from Ch'zrrym manage to rp having spoken deep all their lives without having the innate ability.
