I have started playing sk for not too long, but I must say I am really impressed with the mud overall and I have enjoyed mudding here tremendously.

After playing with my current char to "get my feet wet" with the general game mechanics and atmosphere of Pyrathia, I am ready to be more involved. I wish to start a new char altogether, and my question is about starting in kingdoms such as Zhenshi and Uxmaln that are fashioned after real life civilizations.

How far can I fashion my character after the real life couter part of the said civilization? I have seen several players online with Japanese names and titles in Romanji, so I guess I can make a character from Nerina more Japanese in feel and behavior than regular medieval sword and sorcery high fantasy?

For example, could I make a preist in Nerina, and played him more like a zen-buddhist monk than a rezplzthx-monkey? Or paladin as samurai, etc?

Enlighten me!

You certainly can make a more oriental-type character in Zhenshi. It's not required, of course, but the possiblity is certainly there. Indeed, it's encouraged to fit your character's background in with your country.

There are limits, though. Religions are the same all over Pyrathia. An Alshainite paladin is going to be expected to conform to that religion, no matter what his other traits.

If you're really looking for a monk-like priest, you might be happier with an amoral god like Sadal. Such priests are less likely to be caught up in crusades that might make little sense for your character concept. Another possibility is a shaman, which you can play as loyal to any ancestral spirits that suit your fancy.

Glad you're enjoying the place! Have fun!

uxmaln is clearly modeled after Barter Town from Mad max beyond thunderdome.

Welcome to thunderdome B@#$!es!!!

Empire used to be a romanesque facist culture. It's slowly changing though still strongly militaristic.

Zhensh is modeled after oriental culture only nice. As in, instead of real samurai (who were all hellions as we've established a gazillion times already so please don't have this argument again) we have fake "samurai" who are paladins and no caste system.

Taslamar is like a camelot/king author culture...least its supposed to be.

sith a niel...uh..i dunno...elves and stuff.

Krychire - Think Scandanvian tribes pre-roman influence, like beowulf times, only replace early christian influence with zombies and demons. And a twist of lovecraft.

Absolutely, that would be a great fit. I'm not sure what level of new-to-the-game you are, but there is a cabal which is an order of monks - that might be something to aspire to. Cabals require some experience, a little luck, a stoutness of heart, and a high level of roleplay, however, so please take this advice with sufficient caution.

. . . . And a ton of patience.

No matter what, though, a priest will be treated by other characters as "resplzkthx" . . . it goes with the territory. How you choose to deal with it is entirely up to you.

The kingdom of Zhenshi is more of a cross between Arabic and Eastern culture, really. I strongly discourage using any languages other than English in your title, because it looks incredibly cheesy and dumb. There is no 'old Zhensh' language that uses Japanese or any other foreign language, and there is no 'drow' tongue other than deep tongue (commenting on the people who use the Forgotten Realms drow language in their title for deep-elves)

Agreed. Very, very much agreed. I would say this extends not just to your title, but in any form of how you present yourself. No need for Japanese or Latin here.

No absolutely true. There is nothing to stop you taking an "interpretation" of any given religion that the mainstream might actually find heretical and running with it.

You might not run very far, and the track is bound to be bumpy, but it's been done before and will no doubt be done again.
