What I dont like is that we are taking something that already exists, change the name a wee bit and pretend like we created something new. I see no originality from changing the name Ithilid to Ilithid, nor do I see any originality in changing drow to dark-elf. I only see it as a way to avoid copyright laws, though I do not think it would be an issue with a free game.

Illithid's the original name, in fact.

I don't think anybody's "pretending we created" mindflayers, any more than we "created" halflings... or than G.Gygax "created" halflings, for that matter. *cough*

That having been said, mindflayers rule.

My feeling is that we very much wanted to avoid what was being done to dark elves in TSR's games and the related novels. We were fine with it up to a point, as our deep-elf city attests. But there are lots of things about TSR's dark elves that don't make sense in our lore. Renaming the race deep-elves was a good move to make the concepts distinct.

I'd also note that there are lots of ideas for dark races, and very few for light races or classes to balance them. Not that I've come up with anything I'd really want as a good race/class either. Just pointing out this is yet another problem with the idea.

We need a non-humanoid race, even griffons as played in SK are too humanoid.

I would love to see somethign like a puddle or an ooze based PC race. Give them innate ironskin or something, limited armor slots and various innate abilities to offset it.

That has potential.

farsooth, i think the reason is that we already have more lightie possibilities than darkie:

griffon, pally, elf
vs
XXXX, helli, delf

(i think I just got a stiffy seeing a missing darkie race right under griffon... wyverns anyone? Please??)

SK Character: Briner, Senach, Myson, others.
In light of the last post, I vote that all wyverns be taken out of the game, and the word banned from the realms.

After coming across one of these in Ch'zzrym I think they would be a cool race. Perhaps they could be the first race to reach 25 int as a racial max. Relatively low physical attributes with innate resistances to magic and charm effects with maybe 22 wisdom. Like a gnome only more intelligent and less wise. Any ideas on this?

Try charming one.
