How can I tell what type of corpse will yield what type of undead... I know it depends on level, but at what levels can I create what, and what type of corpses do I need?

every 10 levels you can raise a new type. Identifying the corpse can help you estimate its level, but just trial and error would be the easiest.

Depends on the level of the corpse, yeah. For instance, if you killed a grandmaster PC, then the corpse would make a wraith, which takes a grandmaster. If you killed a Champion, however, it would make a wight, which only takes a Master to animate. So in some cases you can animate higher levels than yourself.

Wrong. You can only animate corpses your level and lower.

Yep, if you try and animate a high level corpse when you're not up to it, you get a spell fail message.

Wrong. With a bard singing songs of magic, you can raise things over your level. That's how I managed to make delf matrons into wraiths once.

Every necro needs a bard in their pocket. . .

I should probably point out that you can raise a wraith prior to grandmaster. I think it's level 49, but it could be as low as level 48.

It's 48, but there are very very few level 48 NPCs out there, and even less 49s.

For each bard that is singing, that will be one less lvl required to raise a certain corpse.
