I'd have more sympathy for this view if a symbol were something vital. But it's not called a symbol for nothing, it's literally symbolic. The bonuses it provides to statistics are minor at best. Holy symbols are important primarily for RP purposes, which is why I've purposefully made it so that you can only receive one by roleplaying with a priest character.

That people still seem to desperately want them despite being of limited utility is inexplicable but welcome to me. Priest is the only class that SK NEEDS to function, which is not true of paladins or hellions. I'm not going to dilute a unique spell that makes other players want to recruit priests into their religion.

Yes, it's for RP reasons, Dulrik, but it is a powerful part of paladin/hellion RP. No one is *ever* not going to invest a priest into their religion. For resurrection ALONE.

I do not see how this unique spell adds ANYTHING to priests. They have -resurrection-. Resurrection. Resurrection. Resurrection.

IF ANYTHING, it will add more F2's and create MORE roleplay because paladins and hellions will now have more reasons to get F2, instead of just not caring about faith past f1 if they don't want to be HF.

I can not claim to understand why you think this spell makes priests more valuable, or why it is so destabalising to the class.

I'm not sure how it goes for the hellion faiths, but I think the vows are quite clear that priests > paladins:

vow of poverty wrote:
[T]he Paladin shall give to the church or the needy all excess wealth.... No less than one tenth shall go directly to a priest of the faith for the upkeep of the priesthood and the ministry, if such a priest is available.

vow of obedience wrote:
Paladins must obey the commands of Paladins in higher standing in their order, priests of the same faith, or any priest of a good god, provided the priest is in good standing with the gods of good, and is approved by a council of Paladins as being worthy.

vow of service wrote:
A Paladin who finds his honor tarnished must immediately confess to a priest and seek to atone for the evil by restitution, service, and sacrifice. No Paladin found wanting in any of these vows shall command others on the field of battle, nor sit in council with others until the Paladin has repented of the unknightly deeds and atoned for them.

Priests aren't greater than a paladin. You can quite clearly notice that they need to actually be approved by a council of paladins as being worthy of recognition. They only reserve that sort of honor for those worthy of praise and those that are recognized as having authority on the matter, not just some joe schmoe priest. I highly doubt a paladin of Alshain is going to want to listen to an Aludran priest when it comes to ways to deal with evil doers.

Herein lies your problem Dulrik. The religions on SK are not Christianity. They don't preach about serving their god with only faith, and not sight. A symbol of their faith identifies them as being part of a religion, and since they are divine manifestations of their god's power that they can wear, WHY WOULDN'T THEY WEAR IT?

It's like having a little piece of heaven with them.

I never said they wouldn't want to wear it. I've guaranteed that there is no reason NOT to wear it if you can get it, because it uses a unique slot. But it's still not vital and you still have to RP with a priest to get it.

After having had an F3 and seeing a few issues, may I point something out D?

When I created Jeruvere, there was no active priest in Fear. I was automatically made an F2 just so they could get symbols because Rayvorath and the other high knight couldn't make symbols. I was asked to make symbols and give them to the knights and extras for their squires.

With another character in the faith, the HP was NEVER around and the other HF was not a priest. This character went for years and years without a symbol.

Now for me personally, it absolutely disgusts me to hear that there is a new HP because someone made a priest for the faith because they want the sacred armor. This person gets the armor and as a sidejoke gets to make symbols.

Realistically, if I am the highest follower of my god/dess, why wouldn't they bless me to make symbols? Not all faiths appeal as readily to priest playing types. Being a priest is a lot of work. Why do you think the term rezzwhore is out there?

It seems rather realistic to me for an F3, no matter the class, to be able to create symbols. Wouldn't that be better than people making a priest and instantly being F2s just for symbols? Because that's what happens now.

You still have to RP with the hellion/paladin to get it. It's still not vital then. The issue still remains that paladin/hellion F3's should be able to create symbols and it causes more RP overall.

Look at it this way, D, would you prefer this?

Hey you're a priest. Here's f2 so you can make me symbols. K thx.

Or this?

Hey, you're a priest. Welcome to the faith. Here a symbol in the name of our Lord. Go forth and make him proud and you may one day be blessed enought to your own.

I don't think this will do anything but aid in RP, and furthermore, if you believe that priests get a boost in numbers compared to other classes due to create symbol, wouldn't that also mean that hellion/paladins would see a boost as well?

I'm telling ya, D, no one plays priest for create symbol. If they did, you'd be giving them the ability to create them on investment. You might say "don't have symbols? get a priest!" But most priests are already made with a concept in mind. So unless we tap ooc friends, it's just not happening too often. And even then, we are unduly giving them f2 flags, which makes them -unblemishable- in the event they are 'screw ups' to the HF.

Finally, most of all, this change can only give positive impact to the RP and incentive to RP.

Since this is apparently the religion's only priest, aren't we talking about F3 as soon as he proves himself? The high priest position is meant to be filled. If that seems unfair, then ask for a change in the favor system.

I'm not worried about any faith that doesn't adequately test a priest first. If the players and immortal don't care about the IC religion, the new priest can only be an improvement.

That a church has some incentive to promote a worthy priest seems quite reasonable. That such promotion means less power in the HF's hands leaves me unmoved. Again, that's more a quarrel with the favor system than the symbol spell.

Yes, but the choice is based on what the player thinks would be fun. Church members have the opportunity to demonstrate there's something worth joining. The IC actions of today influence the priests you'll get a RL month later - as they should.

Granted, even the best roleplay can't guarantee a priest. However, ceasing to try can't possibly help.
