Why do they cast these spells during combat?

Maybe they don't like being attacked, ever consider they do not like to die?

Faerie Fog isn't offensive whatsoever - it's a waste of a spell to cast during combat.

All it does is reveal hidden or invis characters and cancel the effects of sneak.

So I ask again, why do they cast it during combat?

I do not know whether it dispels a certain appearance-altering cabal spell - it would be extremely funny if it did.

I don't know for sure, but this is my suspicion:

The spells a NPC casts during combat are selected randomly from their list of available spells. Thus, occasionally a NPC that can cast faerie fog will select it from their list of spells to cast. The same reason a NPC that can cast edrain or harm will occasionally cast fly instead, even though it has no offensive value whatsoever.

Bottom line:

It's a round where you aren't getting owned by offensive spells. AKA, a gift horse. Try not to look it in the mouth, eh?

Damn, Nath, shut up. We don't want this getting looked into - for the same reason I don't want it looked into that priest NPCs will occasionally cast sanc during battle instead of a flamestrike/confusion. [REDACTED].

What -should- be looked into, however, is that every single caster NPC, including reknowned warlock and shaman trainers are suddenly priests, casting harm and hold person...

Faerie Fog also makes a target easier to hit.
