I used to like pole maces for training with groups because it was easier to auto-target rather than figuring out the keyword and making sure you don't accidentally target a horse or a party member.

By the time you get a pole-mace, you probably have spear of faith, and should be doing all your leveling that way. When not leveling, I would rather have a shield out, just in case.

Sprites are magic, Nath. Duh.

Obviously they can flit into second row of a combat ranking whenever they feel like it.

On your old question about staffs...I seem to remember that back in the old days, sputums were staffs. I took a look at a certain gypsy weaponsmith, and that staff is now a spear. Food for thought.

A search through google shows nothing about sputums as staves or spears.

Thus I have no way to really compare it.

However, Wikipedia states that a staff is:

A staff is a large, thick stick or stick-shaped object used to help with walking, as a status symbol, or as a weapon. An older plural form of staff is staves (compare wolf, wolves and knife, knives). In American English the usual plural form has become staffs, however British and International English regard both as acceptable and "staves" as preferred.

And a spear is:

Spear (Greek: λόγχη, Latin: hasta, German: Speer, Lanze, French: lance, Spanish: lanza, Italian: lancia) is the name of a pole weapon used for hunting and war, consisting of a shaft, usually of wood, with a sharpened head. The head may be simply the sharpened end of the shaft itself, as is the case with bamboo spears, or it may be of another material fastened to the shaft. The most common design is of a metal spearhead, shaped like a triangle or a leaf.

I believe - and I can be marked wrong on this - but a sputum, or other staffs, had a hard knob attached to one end. Maybe it was used like a blunt spear. Who knows - especially since I can't find a picture of...WAIT! I know why I can't find a picture of it. I spelled it wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spetum

Whoops. My bad.

The spetum is a medieval polearm. It consists of a staff of about 8 feet in length with a long double edged spearhead with two short diagonal blades that are angled back from the spearhead. These were added to make the weapon cause additional damage as it is pulled out of a victim.

That would probably account for the staff/spear confusion.

I see. Well that was very informative. A spetum is indeed a spear, which means that we are still left with the existence of long staffs (ranging over 100in in length) and bo staffs (which could be over 72in in length). This would be more than enough reach required to strike at a foe behind a steed, considering that most "long" spears were around 6 feet in length (not including the spearhead), though it is understandable that the weapon itself would be slow and heavy.

If there were long staffs, that'd be the exception. I can tell you right now - and you probably know this if you're bringing up bo staffs - but they weren't used for reach in the major sense - bo staffs are normally held like quarterstaffs, and are only occasionally used for the reaching thwap. In sk terms..it'd probably maybe once every other round or two that it'd hit at reach.

I agree completely. I could really only see a long staff being useful at full range. Anything closer and it would be difficult to wield. Of course, I imagine most people would drop the staff and switch to a melee weapon of choice.

What I would like to implemented is a tweak on parole. Should one not commit crimes in a period of time (say a IC year for example) and who is banished could be able to buy a parole from a NPC. The fee would be based upon what crimes are listed. Some will say that you should rp this out with a leader of the tribunal but I don't foresee a paladin giving a parole to a necro, yet sometimes money paid towards a land benefits the economy more than a stubborn dark/light conflict.

Why don't you see a Pallie offering parole to a necro? I have done it and with a very good reason (IC). It hasn't bitten me on the arse... yet.

There are all sorts of reasons to offer things to people, giving a chance to bring them to the light, blah blah blah.

I'd like to see more hidden lands, for instance:
You walk east.
Obvious exits: e w s ne valley n s
You enter the valley.
In this valley would be a whole other lanscape (similar to how the wastelands is a different landscape) that is valley-like and may have a small village in it or other things as well.

Thoughts?
