It's as simple as the fact that it was cool to be able to create a trophy out of your defeated enemy and have everyone know it. The game has matured in a different direction since those early days, and I can't argue that it actually makes sense. I'll still be a little sad to see it go though. It's certainly not going to be on my priority list of changes.
I can understand the notion of it being cool to wear a full suit of your enemy, but the problem comes in when people use the skills to find out people's names without greeting them. It's just lame. A lot of people, including myself, do not use the "feature" to unveil people, but not everyone is responsible enough to keep to that. If they were, I'd be all for keeping names just so people can laugh and ask who they are.
The idea has been suggested that the skins act like corpses, and if someone has greeted the person, then they will recognize their skin, otherwise, just their race.
