You see a heavy war blade crafted by a hand and mind given to function rather than elegance. Nonetheless, the craftsmanship bears all the markings of a master smith, and the tempered steel blade holds a fine edge well suited to its purpose. The leather-bound hilt is of a length suited to the weight of the blade, clearly designed to allow the warrior bearing to be able to swap his grip from one-handed to two-handed to suit the needs of the situation.

This bastard sword is a medium-sized sword made of steel.

It says you can swap this sword from two-handed to one, and in the game the word "swap" is a slightly different color.

Do I just need more training in sword, or does this ability not yet exist?

{yes, I did try typing swap already.}

It may have been altered or nerfed, or perhaps not fully implemented yet. Gaining skill in sword doesn't open up access to new commands (though that would be kind of nifty).

Answer: Nerf.

That bastard sword is a REALLY old item. I don't recall it working in that manner for years.

If you want to wear it one handed. If I remember right. You had to put something in your other hand, first.

It's one of Sargas V1's wonderful items from the rebuild of Seawatch. They all used to work, the lances and bastard swords both used to have a script for 1h or 2h use. Someone broke them, and never fixed them.

It's because those subtypes are one handed.

I've seen one and two handed bastard sword variations.

The lances had to be fixed because of the skill being BROKE if you could two-hand the lances I'm thinking of.

Actually, technically speaking, they were put in with the rebuild of Seawatch by Sargas_v2.

Sargas_v1 was our old friend Bugtussle (nobody tosses a dwarf)

I liked the bastard swords, but the lances from the same area were my particular pride and joy as they were scripted to detect if you were mounted or not and then switch to one or two handed use accordingly. It always bugged me that you couldn't use a lance one-handed from horseback.

The scripts didn't break, I disabled them at D's request shortly before the weapon changes and combat revisions were implimented. Some years ago now.
